... is just awful. Not even slightly fun to play thanks to insta-death drops galore and a horrible boss on act 2.

Did anyone else loathe this stage?

I don't like it either. Then again, I never liked the original stage from Sonic and Knuckles, either.

...you're surprised you're able to fall off an airship? just take it slow, it's obviously your first playthough, and you're obviously frustrated. yes, it's sonic, and he's a fast guy, but the game is about learning the levels and learning how to beat them quickly. simply holding right is never an option in the classic-style sonic games. take your first playthrough slowly; you have ten whole minutes to finish the level!

Of course I expect to be able to fall, but I also feel there are a few sections in which the "intended" route isn't signposted well enough, which leads to cheap deaths. One part in particular (near the electric coils) was really bad for that.

I really liked it, I thought it was a nice remix of the original, and I thought the boss was alright. Though, I personally don't really like any of the bosses I've faced other than the Mean Bean Machine one, which had me smiling like an idiot. I loved that game as a kid.
