So is this a prequel or not for Forces?

Unless the opening to a hypothetical Maria 2 has him jumping out of a weird time portal then it's safe to assume the classic Sonic we see in Forces is the same Sonic from Mania.

Well even then he could be jumping through the portal that they probably create at the end of forces to send him home

Certain gameplay elements may be similar, but I think that they're set in different universes. Is Mania even canon?

My belief is that it erases the events of Sonic 4 from canon

Because I really want Sonic 4 to be erased from canon

It's official, Sonic Mania explains how Classic Sonic ended up in Sonic Forces, and maybe even the origin of Infinite's powers.

I don't think so, because from my perspective the Phantom Ruby acted of its own accord in opening that portal after being knocked off the final boss, and Sonic just happened to be caught in the vortex as it teleported itself away. Personally I feel a somewhat more likely theory is that the Ruby transported itself a bit further forward in time than Classic Sonic went, and that Infinite is the avatar's future self corrupted by the Ruby's unstable dark energy.
Whatever the case may be though, if these games are connected then Infinite almost certainly has the Ruby. How else would he have powers that so closely resemble a Super State but with a different energy signature that Tails' machines don't recognise? It fits so well!
