Time Stones?

According to sonic.wikia.com the backstory for Sonic Mania goes as follows:

After saving Angel Island, Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower are relaxing when Tails picks up an odd energy reading from far away. Despite not being the Chaos Emeralds, this reading is remarkably powerful, and Tails convinces Sonic to investigate it with him.

Remember that although Tails could be unlocked in the mobile remake of Sonic CD, Tails did not actually come to Little Planet with Sonic. (In fact, some such as myself believe that CD happened before 2 but that's an argument for later) This fits with Tails not recognizing the energy source.

I know it's unlikely, but do you think we'll have to collect the Chaos Emeralds and the Time Stones? Maybe through the Blue Spheres bonus stages?

UPDATE: I won't spoil what it is but the. new energy signal is not the time stones.

The blue spheres stages give you bronze coins. We don't know what they do yet but I'm pretty sure time stones aren't returning.

I thought I did hear this somewhere... but even if it is true, what would they do and how would they work?

Completing a Blue Sphere stage nets you a silver medallion. Getting a Perfect (all possible rings) gets you a gold medallion. What the medallions actually do is unknown.

I don't think these are the time stones, or else each zone would have a past, present, good and bad future mechanics – essentially, this game would be Sonic CD 2. Unless SEGA has disabled these mechanics and intends to show us a huge surprise, I don't see that happening.

I won't lie, though: I would love to see a past, present and future version of Green Hill and Chemical plant.

My take is that this game willl tie into Sonic Forces, and the strange energy we see are things that will allow Sonic to travel from a dimension to another. A "true ending" would finish this tying.

I was thinking it wouldn't necessarily need to have time travel, at least not on the zones that aren't on little planet. But yeah I don't think it will be the time stones either, and it will probably tie into forces. I just thought the time stones are kind of neglected considering how powerful they are, and it would be cool to bring them back in mania.
