Except, from what I'm aware, Robotnik has always been known as Eggman in Japan, where that didn't get stuck until.. I think Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. I'm not sure, someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that.

I'm fine with either. Sonic calls him Eggman anyway, even though his real name is Ivo Robotnik.
From someone who loves all the great Sonic cartoons and comics: sorry, but his name is Eggman. Robotnik is the wrong name for a wrong people. This is not my opinion (I prefer the idea of Eggman as a nickname), and this is not up for debate (you can't argue with the original games).

Yeah, no. As a kid I played, watched and read everything Sonic. So, sorry, but YOU are wrong. Regardless of what they called him in Japan, here it was ALWAYS Robotnik, clear through to the Dreamcast. Take that weak **** out of here, kid.

Eggman was his japanese name. that's all...

PS: His canon name is still Ivo "eggman" Robotnik. But they called him Eggman now to simplify the localisation.. It's like calling Bowser "Bowser Koopa" because he's the king of the Koopas

"Robotnik is the wrong name for a wrong people" - that's racist *ding*. But seriously, why so agressive towards "wrong people"?

Whatever you want to believe, that's fine. I did a little look a bit after I made my post to confirm my thoughts.

Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik stuck officially after the 1999 release of Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. Though officially he was known as Eggman in Japan since Sonic's first release, he did not get that moniker here in the states and was instead simply "Robotnik" (same with the older cartoons for a while, though there are a few that also included Eggman if I recall)

Also, "Eggman" is his nickname. Sonic calls him that frequently in the later iterations of the games due to his body shape and such; which is partially why its been heard more often in the later games.
I wrote this earlier elsewhere, I'll leave this here as well...
Ivo Robotnik with the names spelt backwards is "Ovi" which is the Latin prefix meaning egg & "Kintobor" which was derived of two seperate references to one... Kin meaning rich, greedy and finally Tobor refering to an 1950's film called 'Tobor The Great' (in which a boy calls upon his best friend, a lumbering robot, to save him and his inventor grandfather from communist agents. And this is where his character was actually inspired from.)

Keep in mind that this is not to say that the name "Robotnik" was given before Eggman but rather to show where the ideas for his background came from.

I would actually love if he was introduced as Dr. Ivo in this game as opposed to Eggman or Robotnik but I doubt that will happen.

I like how you are fighting over a character name (Like Tails and Miles Prower).

Seriously the character was based on Roosevelt apparently. Also he was an egg-shaped man (this explain why he's called "eggman".)

But saying that only one of the two is the correct name is nonsense
Robotnik's grandfather (Gerald Robotnik) was based loosely off of Dr. Harrison, even down to the military issue and secret lairs. I'm not sure who Robotnik's adulthood is based off of but I know his childhood is based off of Brian "Gadge" Roberts' character. Both grandfather and grandson are inventors trying to make the world a better place so on and so forth.

I also know that Eggman/Robotnik was born as Julian Kintobor (as lore shows) and only later was known as Ivo Robotnik. I just thought these little facts were worth mentioning to anyone who cared. I mean, this lore might not even been added til after the game's release.. I'm not sure.

Thanks, @DontBlink :-)

I thought that the Kintobor story was retconed in the main serie
This
Kintobor comic stuff is not canon. The only things that are canon are games and for the main story it is sonic 1,2,Cd (I think),3&k. No one cares what you call him. I'm not calling him eggman or robotnik. I'm calling him eggsman
Fixed it :)

Yeah, the family line, I forgot why. The mother was Robotnik and the father was Kintobor if I remember correctly.

SatAM is always so relevant though, I loved the show as a kid. If not cannon, it's still nice to see the story expanded in the right ways.

I seriously doubt they coined the name "Robotnik" with the idea that his name backwards would mean something, especially since Robotnik was a name given to him in the games NOT the comics where the Kintobor name would be created. As far as things go, whatever sort of "character" could be derived out of it is purely coincidental since they just wanted a name for Sonic's villain that would more in line with his theme (ROBOTnik.) while trying to avoid the Eggman name since the marketers thought folks wouldn't take him seriously.

Also, 18 years later and people still can't settle for the fact that both names are fine? GEEZ. Some people here are adults now, you'd think it be just fine to just call him however you feel it's appropriate and let things be bygones and not act so snooty, as eccentricdomain is demonstrating. I'm pretty sure I'm way older than most you of you guys here, and I've no issues with his name and I just intertwine between the both of them depending on the context. Though I say Eggman more often since it just rolls off the tongue easier.

In my opinion, Eggman should be used as an insult, with Dr. Robotnik being the official name. That gives him a serious name for serious moments, while letting Sonic's snark be part of his character.
