End of the World: Ax and slingshot

Has anyone else reached end of the world and found Uncle R? I am wondering how to use the two edged ax that you can buy in the very last trading time. It does not work on any trees. Does anyone know its purpose? I am alone in a town called Sojourn and have reached the end of the trail (end of the world) and met the mysterious Uncle.

I was wondering about that ax too because it doens't work for me. I finished the game, and went to a bunch of different trail stops and never got to a tree that it worked with.

I think I figured this out after also buying the slingshot and being unable to use it. If you weren't given the recipe by the uncle, I think you can't use the object. I'm a master hunter and explorer and was given clothing recipes by the uncle. Even as a master hunter, I can't use the slingshot.
