can't fire cannons on ship

so i can't fire the cannons using mouse and keyboard but with an xbox controller i can. Am i doing something wrong?

What ship do you have?

the very first ship. i am working my way to the sailboat right now.

If your ship is an Epheria Sailboat or Epheria Frigate they do not have Captain controlled cannons.
You either have to leave the wheel of your ship, go to your cannons on either the port or starboard sides, and fire them manually from the cannons themselves.
Or have someone you're playing with fire them for you as you wheel the ship.

If you have upgraded your Sailboat or Frigate, then they do have Captain controlled cannons.
Hold LMB to aim (elevation) port cannon and release LMB to fire.
Hold RMB to aim (elevation) starboard cannon and release RMB to fire.

that is the problem i know i have to stop the boat and man the guns it is just none of the canon controls work be it with mouse and keyboard ui or controller ui.

What level is the character that you're trying to use?
Characters below 50 can't use cannons so that might be an issue.

First make sure you are stocked up with cannon balls via the Wharf Manager.

This is a Vell Guide video, but Anders does a good job explaining how to use the ships manual cannon.

i have cannon balls. does the type of gear on the boat matter?

Have you changed your settings back to M/KB instead of Controller?
If no, that might be preventing it from working for you.

You should be able to fire your cannon via M/BK if you were able to via Controller.
The gear would not make a difference if it fired or not.

EDIT: You might have to take your ship out of port to see it fire.

i can confirm that this game is a buggy mess. changing the ui back to M/KB does fix the problem
