I'd say, go with the class that looks and feels best to you- play around a bit with different characters perhaps, but if ninja feels right, go for it. Keep in mind it takes a day to delete a character. A lot is also account based so all your properties carry over to the other characters too.
It only really starts to matter when you're high-level, say 56 onwards. That's where it really slows down.

if you like to play ninja
you should play ninja
the grind becomes a real thing after awhile so it is alot more important to play a class that you like
even if it perhaps is not optimal at a certain thing
than to force urself to play something that you disslike
A Ninja (I played the female version, however) has more advantages with a Kunuai, than a shurikan. I don't like that fact, since I find shurikan much more stylish. Both use the Katana-sword for melee-combat and - natuarly - have stealth-skills. (in part fantastic-ones, like those in the cheap, overdrwan films, like teleports and such things.)
You have 6? character slots from the start, so I just would test some. And if you're lucky, a slot is still 50% off in the pearl-shop at the moment (300 instead of 600 pearls).
The best idea is to go with your gut after inspecting each class or even giving them a trial. Asking other people will generally lead to individual preferences which won't account for your own style/preferences.
Bear in mind that 'meta' talk is often related to high-volume / high-speed / mass end-game grinding (and/or PvP), not so much the general populace who just want to find their feet or have some fun - especially seasonal characters (seeing as the free gear and power off-sets a lot of the slowness for pretty much every class). Also, being the lowest in the meta doesn't necessarily mean 'bad', just that (comparatively) they are more flawed than the others. Furthermore, class-balance is a thing in MMORPGs. You could end up avoiding X class because of it, yet a few patches later, it might be the one that gets a lot of love.
My old main (Valk) was called the wheelchair class back when I first played BDO - no awakening, no succession, and roster was half the size it is now - but I rolled with it anyway and had a blast with it. It's in a much better place now since Succession + buffs, but I couldn't get back into it again. I needed to start over to re-find myself seeing as it's literally been years and I'm totally lost with the revamps.
I picked something new as a returning player and dove into the season server a few days back - taking a class I thought looked good and suited me -- which apparently isn't the best at grinding (when using Succession instead of Awakening), yet I'm having an absolute blast as Succession and mincing everything I find. The differences won't truly become apparent until later in the game and/or when the seasonal power is normalized because you'll have access to great gear from the word go, so a lot of the weaknesses won't be felt (for now).
Honestly, if you really, really like the idea of X class but are concerned about what others have said about it, chances are you'll end up playing what others recommend you or what some site says is more meta - and it may not be something you enjoy.
Go with your gut -- but be sure to avail of the 'trial' function or at least try some characters out at the starting area and inspect their abilities so you can see the look/style.
When I returned to BDO, I picked a new class on season servers. The silver income is a lot higher when grinding mobs. Making a PVE character was worth it.
The new PvE character achieved what took five months with my first character. Maybe this is because of season servers and that I already have everything set up. I also made a lot of mistakes when I started playing BDO. It's a lot faster to level to 61 when you have everything in place and have good knowledge of the game. But, the new PvE class grinds faster and it's too obvious to ignore. The silver income is higher with my new PvE class.
I now alternate playing between the two characters, and enjoy it a lot. Don't give up on Ninja. But, I do suggest picking a good PvE class in the future, at-least as your second character.
