This site says 230 thousand people log into black desert daily.
https://mmo-population.com/r/blackdesertonline/
I don't know where the site gets its numbers, but if it's accurate not even 10% of BDO players use steam.
for me i chose non-steam because i tried steam version i quit lol .
The site you linked explains it's methodology here;
https://mmo-population.com/about/
A choice quote from there is;
"It's virtually impossible to work out accurate subscriber counts for MMOs today, and this site cannot do that. However, there does exist a need for people to be able to gauge the activity, growth, decline, and popularity of MMOs.
So, we do it based on reddit subscriber information."
I would rate this as being scarcely better than pulling the numbers from ones rear orifice.
The Steam charts data supports the view that the game population is stable, and is somewhat less than during COVID at it's worst, but it's not inclusive of all players as has been observed in this thread. So we can't be completely certain. This is sort of synergistic with the RNG soup the game itself bubbles along in.
I was under the impression that the, for example NA/EU region servers that one joins using Steam are the exact same servers that players join when using the client downloaded from PA's website. Is this not correct?
So to recap, to make the actual count then, the game has a steam version and one that is not.
But are both parties on the same servers when the various users of the two versions of the game access the game ?
If you then add the fact that there are further subdivisions of the servers Europe, America and if I remember correctly there should still be the various Asian servers .
230,000 users will surely be the count of European and American users excluding Asian ones .
Do you want to know how many approximate players there are in the game , do some jumps in the various servers of the game , you will take a few hours in the overall after having done so many , and take a tour in the cities of Velia and Heidel to see how many users there are sleeping along the banks of the various streams to fish.
When you've counted them all , add an approximate number of 100 users scattered across the various areas of the game and you'll have an approximation .
That said, what do you need to know the number of users present in the game since unless they are active members of your guild (if you are part of a guild or clan), in this game I have never seen that great interchangeability and presence of support to go around for areas of the game with the first one you meet ?
To answer your question specifically in personal opinion and bad experiences that I am still trying to solve with the game, with every change , update of a certain relevance of the game, there are user losses , not because they do not want to play it, but because they can no longer or can not access the game for errors that occur , contrasts between Steam and Pearl Abyss versions , and more .
An obvious case that can answer your question, among the various motivations and problems present in the game , is present and is explained in one of the recent threads written by another user and in many others before that if you read the various threads in the forum , always if they have not been deleted/removed .
The quote taken in highlights by @Proctor Cain (the text between double quotes) I presume he took from an article written by the managers of the game, as well as members of Pearl Abyss.
The question arises, so to make a comparison, a rich herdsman from Montana, who does not have 100 cows , but thousands , and in some cases even millions , would struggle to know how many cows, calves and bulls he has ?
Sorry for the comparison used, or rather I apologize for the poor cows, who are laughing at the fact that an international development company plays , whatever it is , excluding the current case in question called into question , can not count precisely who has "who runs in their house/land".
Of how many users have registered in the game and redeemed it, "among the various existing versions."
The source of the quote is a webpage, the link to which is in my post, directly above the quoted text. The page is on the same website, mmo-population.com, that the figure of 230,000 Active players for BD came from. mmo-population.com is not Pearl Abyss.
Same.
