There are plenty of choices for both female and male of which there are plenty of male/female equivalent classes. Truth be told, most of the male characters are better than the female class. Striker > Mystic, Musa > Maewa, Ninja > Kuno, Wizard > Witch, Warrior + Beserker > Guardian, Nova, and Valk. So if you came here to complain about wanting to play a certain class, but not wanting to play as a female because of reasons; then it is kind of mute point.

What I believe is the simple reason why they are gender locked is that they would have to double the number of animations by having a female set and a male set. The amount of time and effort to double the animations are cost prohibitive so we would end up with about half the classes.

what class do you wanted to play? some got gender counter part like wiz and witch... ninja (a typical english name conversion, should have been shinobi) and kunoichi (direct translated japanese name) of course, Valkyries are female is pretty much known LOL... and its writer idea or story, like drakania... do you wanna be called drakania as a male? LOL

I'm mostly against gender lock in games but in the case of BDO I don't see this problematic. There are plenty of classes and most of them have a counterpart in the opposite gender and In the case of the shais you can make shai "guys" by putting short hair and putting a deeper voice and masculinizing the face of the character using the editor (I've seen some shai guys over there).

If they removed the gender lock on classes that would create a lot of extra work for the game developers. Cause they would have to create the gear models for both male and female for the class in question.

The gender lock thing is for two reasons:

1. It's just a characteristic of Korean MMOs. Lost Ark does the same thing.

2. The game has a lot of ARPG traits (think Diablo or PoE here), and those games have gender locked classes. The combat plays like an ARPG too, not like your typical MMO like WoW or XIV.

We're all probably getting baited/trolled here with the OP, but w.e. Thought I'd try to give some possible explanation/be helpful. ♥♥♥♥ me for trying I guess if we are getting baited/trolled lol.

I don't think it is bait. I think there is a rather large portion of gamers who won't play an RPG type game as a specific gender and see gender locking as a severe limitation in their ability to enjoy the game.

Prominent YouTubers and Twitch Streamers Josh Strife Hayes and Asmongold are in the forefront of why Gender Locking is bad among some others. I get where they are coming from although I don't have their hang ups, I think their views are pretty short sighted and not looking at the ramifications from a development point of view. If classes where not gender locked, we would have New World Animations and playing female character would largely feel like playing a male character with longer hair.

I know there is a stereotype of its just males wanting to play waifu characters, but there is a pretty significant population of BDO players that are female that like to play characters that are pretty and act feminine.

Asmon and Josh Strife are just playing to a crowd/being reactionary for the sake of being reactionary. They didn't even play that many hours of this game to even know half the ♥♥♥♥ they're talking about and they just go for the low hanging fruit of "game's pay to win ♥♥♥♥ that game dude sub with Prime"

I dont want to hear about how "theres plent of classes with both" NO THERE ISNT. Its 2022, unless there is a SPECIFIC REASON we need to lock a class gender, ALL classes should have both models, or a male equivalent. This game is DRASTICALLY lopsided in new classes being female only. Its ridiculous. Especially the Northern Viking Styled class. Such a huge disappointment.

From what I read, the BDO developers don't think of the characters as classes. They think of them as individuals. As they described it, you don't play the class Guardian. You play the character Guardian. You don't play the class witch. You play the character witch.

They have a completely different philosophy than what many here think of as classes, so in their philosophy swapping sexes doesn't make sense.

It's their game, so I have no problem with their point of view in this :)
