What the Shai does have is a great skill.
It is Hop III, not Hop-Three, but Hop III. 😊
Also, lock Evasion.
The Shai does have a clunkiness about her, but it is mainly an illusion.
When you get her Awakened she has a lot of very good buff and de-buff capabilities.
PvE soloing with a Shai is de-buff attack, attack, de-buff, attack, attack. Plus, she has a ton of HP and weight carrying capabilities.
I’ve watched youtube videos of Shai’s doing a good job soloing at Stars End.
But, for me, I use my Shai for life skilling. 😊
I have maewha as my main toon and shai is so bad at clearing trash mobs, moving and what irritates me most is when I have skill to range attack on RMB and forward+RMB makes her skating into crowd and getting pummeled because she has like 3-4 seconds of idle standing before she can switch to attack mode after skating. her donkey is cute but he died twice in 5 minutes - drown in a shallow desert puddle we tried to pass and next time stuck at autopathing and got killed in 2 hits by trash mobs.
I regret picking shai for a season, have no idea how I'm going to level her to 61 with her poor combat, movement and lack of good armor (no stones to pen tuvala thanks to gambling rng). Probably I will give up and turn her into donkey, no, use Fughar timepiece and Shai will work on gathering rocks, milk, meat and such. Also she's too short and can't climb/jump as good as other toons and her attacks usually target enemy crotches or if there are hills, high places she can't attack these targets.
When she hit 50 her attacks were amazing too. Now not so much as she has no clean damaging skills, my main attack is circling around like a monkey, it's getting old fast.
As a Seasonal Character you MUST upgrade your Naru weapons / armor to PEN then switch them out with Tuvala.
Naru Gear Exchange for Narchillan or Tuvala [grumpygreen.cricket]
As a Seasonal Character do NOT switch to the Narchillan gear. You will have zero weapons and armor you can use on the Seasonal Server.
Do the Naru to Tuvala switch.
To get great Quest Combat XP you MUST have the Chenga Tome on you.

NOTE: If you have never done this quest before, the first time through, it is a bit mind numbing and tedious.
But, after that, all other times you do this quest it is nearly cut in half and much easier. 😊
EDIT: A Shai can do this. I made mine extra short. The smallest she can get and completed the Chenga Tome quest. The tedium of this quest is swimming and knowing where to jump to grab and climb. It can be done.
Also, the skill Gather Around will pull enemies to you. If they are stuck on ledges leave them alone and move to a different enemy.
My hand me down plan for gear will be:
1. Guardian (my main)
2. Witch (she's so friggin' cool)
3. Lahn (not so much for her fighting style but because I love being able to glide off any mountain with her)
4. Sorceress (she was my first BDO character, so she has a soft spot for me)
5. Shai
6. Everybody else
Graphical Oddity
For the first 24 hours I played the Shai I was more than a little puzzled why the designers decided to have some sort of magical constant flatulence coming out of her rear. I didn't get a horse for her figuring she'd use her donkey, so she ran everywhere, but I didn't really understand why they gave her the whirling air coming out her butt and couldn't stop constantly noticing it as she ran.

Finally when she hit level 56 and I did the awakening quests for her I figured out there's supposed to be a musical instrument there. But the first 56 levels she didn't have that instrument, and she still had the whirling winds. Even now that she's awakened I question their design decision to have those whirling winds present when the instrument is stashed and invisible.
Donkey
Picture of Squibbles the Shai Donkey: https://imgur.com/AigdcTk
The Shai donkey is beautiful and cute, but I'm more than a little disappointed in it. The donkey was my main reason for making the Shai, and with 56 levels (more than 24 hours straight) of build up to get the quest, it's a let down. Yes, with the Run Run skill the donkey is acceptably fast, but compared to the miniature elephant the Shai donkey is missing important skills like:
- Roar (rearing on hind legs to allow instant switching of direction before taking off)
- Quick Turn
- Quick Stop
- Leap [Edit: elephant doesn't have leap, but donkey needs it badly as mentioned below, especially since donkey is supposed to be the main mount for the Shai whereas elephant is meant to be just a trader's mount as an alternative to a wagon]
On top of that, I tested the "Step Aside!" (Charge) skill on starter goblins, and it did not damage to them. Worse, the starter goblins surrounded the donkey and trapped me. I had to actually dismount and kill the goblins, even though I was in an open field, to get past the goblins designed for 12 AP players to fight.
The inability to leap even over the shortest of obstacles, like an ankle-height rock, nearly got the donkey and my shai killed at the Bashim base today. A horse would have leaped over something six times as tall even without the high jump skill. My Shai was riding between a crowd of Bashim, and there was the shortest tiny rock lip on the path. I tried to jump it, and the donkey couldn't even step over it and got stuck. No taller than a tree stump, and the donkey couldn't cross it. Then the Bashim surrounded us and started attacking. Again I had to dismount and start killing all the Bashim just to back away from the short rock and try to ride around. This completely broke every rule of immersion to not be able to step over an ankle height rock on a donkey.
And why the heck can't my Shai attack from the donkey? She has stirrups, saddle, barding, champron and horse shoes on it (a full donkey gear set).
Clunky Movement
I figured out what most annoys me about the Shai attacks (except for the left-LMB and right-LMB strafe leaps). They root the Shai, completely making her stop in her tracks and wait, for no visible reason.
In comparison, the Guardian has a lot of slow attacks that root her for a while, but the guardian is actually doing something when she's rooted. She's either jumping up and smashing the ground with a devastating whollop and fire, or she's fiercely building up a charge and tension getting ready to release it. But the Shai just stops dead, completely ruining the flow of the fight.
The only Shai attack that feels smooth is the left-LMB and right-LMB attack which can be more or less flowed into each other non-stop while she moves, but kitty in the post above is not wrong that having only one enjoyable attack can get stale.
The bulk of the Shai attack animations need an overhaul to match the delays so they don't feel artificial.
Seasonal Shai
And kitty in the post above is right that the Shai's inability to dash from one spot to another makes her painful to use on a Season server. it's so frustrating to be not twelve steps from the next group of monsters the Shai wants to attack, and other players zoom from way off screen at 3 or 4 times the speed and kill all the monsters before the Shai can take two steps. It's so friggin' hard to actually get to monsters without somebody else killing them first.
Killing 5000 monsters as Seasonal requirement
Oh holy Pain, I signed up for the kill 5000 Gahaz Bandits for the required "Stronger Tuvula Gear" quests, and it took a boring two hours to kill just 500 of them. She goes from group of 4 or 5 to group of 4 or 5 soooooo slowly, and half the time somebody else comes and takes them before the Shai can get there. But even if the Shai finds an area with no other players, it just takes her so long to get around. How the hades am I going to do 4500 more of them (a slit my wrist boring 18 more hours of it) just to get past that portion of the Season quest chain?
I'm telling you with that Stronger Tuvula Gear quest I'm feeling kitty's pain from the post above.
Overall I like my Shai. I'm glad I made her. But I'm not glad I made her as a seasonal character. it doesn't help she lost the Naru enhancement lottery and couldn't even get duo naru gloves and shoes and a useful weapon until around 50+ level. If we're forced to use naru instead of normal weapons, we need 3 or 4 times as many beginner stones early in the game. Yes by late game we have a thousand more than we need, but it doesn't help during mid levels when we need it if we fail the enhancement lottery.
I guess, since I saw from watching a few youtube videos, when I made and played my Shai, I never did grinding in areas where monsters were spread so far apart.
My Hop III skill got me away from or to the mobs perfectly.
I've never used my horse, donkey, or anything for battles and I have never taken them in areas of mobs, so I've never experienced that.
As for armor and weapons, I created my Shai on a normal server, so I didn't even bother with the Naru gear. I immediately bought and enhanced Steel Taritas armor and made it ultimate. Then bought Krea and Oros weapons and made them ultimate. I did my grinding at Helms until level 53. Got my Chenga Tome. Continued to grind at helms until level 56. I took out well over 5K monsters at Helms easily. Did my Awaken quests. Then life skilled after that.
Again, playing a Shai on a Seasonal Server, I can understand the frustration and I totally get it.
On side note with regard to horses, my main character (Guardian) spent much of her life breeding and training horses for all my alts, so they're a big part of BDO to me.
A few weeks ago they had a sale on Celestial Horse Calling Horns. You could basically buy one for about ten bucks instead of twenty. I bought it for my Guardian because she travels a lot and spends a lot of time running to her horse.
I can't off hand think of a better quality of life tool in BDO. I'm trying, but I'm stumped. Yes, you can run to your horse. I did it fine for well over 7000 hours.
But that Celestial Flute lets you call the horse (or donkey or elephant or camel) from anywhere on the map. So if you run on foot from Sand Grain Bazaar to Valencia, you don't have to run on foot back to your horse. You can whistle, and it will come right to you. Even if your horse is in a stable you can use the flute to summon it.
I love the celestial flute so much I later bought another one for my witch, and then I bought one for my Lahn (because she loves to jump off mountains, and this lets her call the horse to her when it's on the other side of a mountain).
I've purchased full eight-piece outfits plus underwear for my first twelve characters (waiting for one I like for Shai and for it to be on sale), and I didn't mind that. I'll probably eventually buy a celestial flute for all my characters as well, especially if they go on sale again.
Why there are no bandits to kill but hordes few minutes later? lol
I have a little over 1000 bandits killed so far, hours of work, but with agris and loot scrolls I made over 100mil on loot. So it's decent grinding spot and I could use extra coin but it still feels not as fluid.
about attacks. She has delays in changing stances and it can be lethal with poor gear. her movement is flawed and I guess she is just for cuteness and mundane life skilling.
as I write this my shai grinds potato into flour and it gives XP with each action. mass processing gives 1 tick for a batch but manual gives a tick every second so it is good to put your shai to process metals or food mats when afk
You could always, find party, party up with some other players to help you get this complete.
One thing I found on Seasonal Servers is to get to level 61 first and then concentrate on the Pass requirements. Less people are there when I finally get there.
the only issue with the bandits is that they already killed by others more agile/fast players.
I resolved this issue by switching to normal server with vicious monsters (some at the bottom of the server list). All bandits are there, fast to kill, killed 1k in less than a hour. the only drawback - I'm missing on tuvala ores and stones - they don't drop on normal servers.
but I'd rather go without stones than spend days looking for lone bandits still alive after horde of players who camps there.
This is not just an issue of convenience. In normal pvm against "trash" monsters (things she can kill in one to five hits and which don't move quickly) she has a fairly impressive arsenal of cone and area attacks. She sometimes starts feeling very good.
But then when she fights against fast moving, hard hitting monsters like Ronin (rift boss) and the equivalent, her absolute inability to run fast in circle around the monster makes her one of the most unpleasant pvm experiences I've had in BDO in thousands of hours of play time.
These are monsters for which you're supposed to run in circle and avoid their fast, hard hits and hit them from the sides or rear. But friggin' Shai can just do short hop and stop, short hop and stop and cannot kite the fast, hard monsters.
I was beginning to think for a while a Shai was a reasonable character for people to main, in spite of the nearly useless donkey and inability to attack from a mount.
But there's no way a Shai is worthy of being a pvm main because she can only fight certain types of monsters and not the whole repertoire other classes can fight.
On my guardian and even witch, rift bosses are one of the most fun parts of the game, regardless of which rift boss it is. On the Shai, it's just horrible on some of them.
And most important for me - she has no simple frontal attack to hack or slash single enemy in front of you. You have to hit 3 times one trash mob to kill it.
I ended up completing season pass and using Fughar timepiece on new Musa. As a result I'm running Musa now and he's pretty much capable to move and fight. Also it allowed me to complete Fughar growth quests to get full set of Naru and stones. I sold everything for 5mil.
Season pass stays completed so its status transfers to cloned char. To the hell with that Shai. I'm glad I can retire her. Her donkey will store all spare tools for alts and she will store consumables I rarely use.
