Typical dungeons and raids, give you some kind of chance at a Gear drop or material drop. However since BDO's progression doesn't require you to buy new gear every few months, what would that incentive be? Silver? Not really, as there are better ways to get it and many people already have their ways of getting consistent silver.
It is open world PvP, yes, that doesn't mean it's a PvP game. A good example: Been grinding from lvl 1 to 62 on my new character and haven't fought a single person. I did not get attacked and I didn't attack anyone, even at popular spots with a lot of people there.
Life skills are more important in BDO than in any other MMO I've played. Getting equipment IS your endgame goal, basically. It's a long journey. You can't really rush that part, even if you spend hundreds of dollars you won't have endgame equip right away.
Some people might argue that the game is "p2w" and it's kind of a hot topic in the Steam forums, but I can assure you that I've seen worse. In terms of "p2w" it's comparable to WoW. You can buy stuff, put it on the market (WoW tokens) for silver. Which also means that you can buy stuff from others without spending a single cent, if you play a lot and generate the silver needed that is.
It's also a game where you have to set your own goal. The game doesn't tell you "go there and do that", like it kinda would with classic mmorpgs like FF14 or WoW. You choose if you want to be a genius at trading and manipulating the market, a guy that grinds for exp or money non-stop, someone who just goes around and PvPs random people etc. You goal could be as simple as: "I'm gonna build a big ass ship to sail the ocean" and that would already be a challenge.
So to summarize:
Very time consuming
Grind heavy
Completely open world
Best life skill system in any MMO
Slightly p2w and comparable to WoW in that term
Set your own goal and have the freedom to whatever you like
Unistalled since months.
"Pay2Win" ....
Anyone wanna go Arena for Proof ? ....
There is no pay2win in this Game ... just Kiddys that cant play ... (thats actually why i quitted)
i mean who da ♥♥♥♥ whill spent 500€ on Customes just to have some Pen Trys ? ... which are not ... succesfully if ure unlucky ... do ur Math Homeboy ...
And dude .... i smoked guys that pushed thousand of euros in their account ... did not help ... because u still have to master all ur Skill points ...
TLDR
BDO is a Good and BAD game... unless you have the time don't bother.... this game is heavily reliable on time sinking, there's no 'End game' there's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ PVE endless grind or garbage PVP where everyone kills you in 1 hit, life skilling would be PVE but its mostly DONE afk... again time sink...
You are a Edgelord.
Common guy, not everybody is highlander like you... a casual player that just arrives at bdo clearly sees and feels the difference of the p2w ♥♥♥♥ in game, common, burst that little bubble that you live in.
Funny you talk about new players and p2w. My two friends who joined a few months back are actually happy with how everything is handled compared to other mmorpg's that are non-subscription based.
And so am I. I've played countless of mmorpg's and I can say with confidence that BDO is not p2w. Sure, you can get some advantages by paying a few bucks, like a permanent tent with buffs, or you could spend thousands of dollars to GAMBLE and try to PEN an item by extracting cron stones from costumes. Is it efficient? No? Are there crazy rich people who do it anyway? Sure. But the number is probably somewhere around ~1% of the playerbase.
And what I just described is pay to progress, even though highly inefficient except for the tent.
P2W would be if the game would let you outright buy a piece of equipment from the Pearl Shop that is unobtainable otherwise and on par with endgame gear or better. That is not the case in Black Desert Online. Newbies or people who are generally new to mmorpg's tend to say that BDO is p2w because of its slow progression. Not everything in BDO is meant to be achievable in under a year and players who have played the game much longer have obviously the edge on newer players. It's just how it is.
Black Desert Online is the Korean equivalent to RuneScape.
i am a casual bdo player. the thing is, yes, it can be grindy IF you want to get all this precious topnotch pen gear, but on the other hand, its a sandbox mmo, so you dont have to!
lifeskilling alone and exploring the huge world is really fun, my highest char is 56.5 right now and i just entered the big desert, so i basically have just like less then 50% of the map explored, theres just so much to see and gather everywhere.
i cannot comment on endgame pvp ganking and all the things on that level. all i can say is, if you want to have fun in this game, its on you how to make that fun. its not a themepark mmo like wow where you follow the shiny yellow road repeat the same dungeons and raids over and over at the end because theres nothing else of value.
and if you are intimidated by potential pvp, start on a season server, those are without pvp and more relaxing.
