Black Desert

Black Desert Online is a weird game
I've been playing mmorpg for about 20 years. Amongst other: Dark Age of Camelot, Lineage 2, World of Warcraft, ff11 online, Lord of the Rings Online, Aion, ff 14 online, Tera, Blade and Soul.

Black Desert Online differs dramatically from the mmorpgs mentioned above.

Meanwhile, I seriously believe that Black Desert was specifically developed in a certain direction: there are a lot of addictive mechanics in the game, and some of it is reminiscent of a casino.

Anyone who says that World of Warcraft classic was an addictive game should take a closer look at Black Desert Online. In an addiction comparison with Black Desert online, even World of Warcraft was a rather harmless video game.

Black Desert Online is actually buy to play, but in detail that's actually a bold statement. In addition to buy to play, it's a lot of buy for comfort. And to be honest, this additional buyable convenience is almost mandatory at least up to a certain point. Unfortunately, the stuff is still expensive enough even during event sales.

Oh yes, and the RNG rules in Black Desert Online. It is an integral part of the gameplay.

idk man, been playing for 2 years? Only spent the initial 10$ and another 20$ on a promo pack, so let's say 30$ for the game, and now I'm usually in the top 20 on the wealth leaderboards, by actively lifeskilling or grinding.

EDIT: Typos.

Well, I would say that this statement is a rather bold statement itself... Just by insinuating (more like stating really) that buying for comfort or (ease of life aka lessening the grind) would be, could be or is a sort of mandatory purchase by a player(s) that play BDO.. Also BDO used to be Buy to play, but the 4th anniversary the game is free on PC, and console but i digress..

This mandatory "additional buyable convenience" you're talking about, isn't there or here in this game.. Players aren't being rewarded with boxes or chests that require a key to open which can only be bought from within the game (store) with real money or from a source that another player that has bought them sells them (Perfect example of this is Star Trek Online).. No players are either rewarded with half a prize with a requirement to spend money to acquire the the rest of the reward or to grind outside of their progression goals to earn something to trade a player for the other half... Nor are there pay walls in this game where players can't progress further without a monetary investment/spenditure by them...

My thoughts are that if there were/are any players that felt or thought there is/was a "mandatory additional purchasable/paid for convenience" that was required in BDO by them, it would be an Idea, thought, feeling, want, need and requirement imposed by themselves from their own need or opinion that "They" had to have their character at X level, with Y gear, and Z character skills to be competitive against whatever it was they thought they had to be compete with..

Which is i'd say maybe 75 to 80% of players that call Game "U" is Pay2Win.. Someone competing against a foe they created in their head..

Just my my 2 and half pennies worth of thoughts..
~Cheers

And that's different from just about every other MMO currently on the market how, again? I'll grant BDO is greedier than many other games in terms of just how much convenience it tries to monetize at the same time, but on the other hand, not constantly being on Value Pack (let alone also being on Blessing of Kamasylve and Secret Book of Old Moon) is more feasible than in a fair number of other games. (I haven't had much time for anything but afk fishing last week, so why on Earth would I waste money on any of them?)

The lockbox model is not actually an example of a convenience type purchase. And while BDO has a weird combination of "buy the box" and "open the box with keys that are a pain to get" instead of the currently more common "buy a key to a box", it's not like it doesn't have lockboxes.

You have a very American opinion on a Korean game.
So you played Blade and Soul and you say BDO is the casino? Wow... The only thing in BDO that is necessary investment but still just a convenience is value pack.
