Mainly because up to lvl 50 the Black Spirit quest hands out free inventory slots and also decent gear for the level, so you can stave of the grind a bit longer.
As for the actual story, it divorces from the Black Spirit quests at about the Harpy area.
It´s confusing what EXACTLY is going on but once your level is high enough you can actually pick up the Main Story line quests on your own.
Just check the suggested tab in your quest window (hit O).

What he said, after the harpies the main quest devolves into "go there, kill that" rather than following the story with Jordine and the resurrection of Belmorne which is a side quest chain that follows on everything that happened in the main quest. I got no idea why they did like this.
As for Mediah and Valencia main quest lines I just started them so there's nothing I can say about their quality yet.
