So many pop-ups, how do I stop them all?

New player trying it out over the free weekend. There's this maze of pop up ads telling me that accounts I've never met have leveled up their cooking skills, etc. It flashes at the top of my screen so fast that I couldn't keep track of it even if I cared.
Do people like that? How do I stop it?

I mean, I could be wrong, but I think Wazza was just saying that in order for your setting changes to go through, you have to apply them, log out of the game, and then log back in. This is not an uncommon feature in games when you change your system settings.

I have no idea why the hell the developers left that "on" as default, it's confusing and distracting.
