Elrics, Helms or Manes would be more appropriate. They drop less stuff, but you will kill them faster so that will make up for it.
At 55 you can choose to take the "Combat Promotion" quest chain from the Otters at Sarma Outpost. That should get you well on your way to 56.
But yes, better gear and Awakening skills are going to be necessary if you are trying to grind Sausans for money.
I find grinding in manes at night is the best way for exp. They die almost instantly with 100AP, which makes the grind faster. Plus, you'll get 1mil of trades every half hour. The 3 grinding spots don't usually drop a lot of silver, so you're basically just grinding for level.
BTW, to increase your AP/accuracy, you have to look into crystals and accessories. Heve is highly praised not only for giving HP but their 2 crystal slots like grunil. There are guides on grunil vs heve vs agerian and what crystals you should put.
I, personally, went from Jarrette set +15 weapon, and hercules gear and slowly switch them out. First, I switched out +15 weapon for a liverto weapon. I would not recommend a liverto to anyone unless it's your main class. I play around too much with too many different classes, so giving one liverto and then another and then another isn't worth the trouble. Sure, kzarka, but one step at a time. If you can get a liverto +15, it's much high AP than a pri and even duo green. The +3 crit really helps. After you switch to liverto, next comes your armor. You're fine with grunil for now. So, after that come your accessories. You should replace your belt and necklace first before thinking of earrings and rings.
There's 3 alternatives that I can think of that'll help you out:
1) ancient weapon core and necklace: Although the regular version is not up to par with the jarrette's set, it's when you pri you'll see a similar AP build +accuracy. The accuracy is highly needed if you want to take on enemies higher level than yourself. I believe you get 12Ap 8DP and +20 accuracy.
2) Helm and elric belt and bracelet. This is a quested item which will probably take your 4 hours to complete. You get both of them and you pri them. I made a whole thing about it. I don't think the transfusion is 100% but if you can smash them together, it's practically for free. You'll get 13AP 2DP and +12 accuracy.
3) the most expensive: pri tree belt and pri ogre ring. This is probably the one everyone uses, but it's extremely expensive and hard to get. Once you get pri, you'll want to get duo, tri, tet. But these items are so high up there, I wouldn't really recommend it so early.
So I reached 56 and got my awakening weapon (not quite sure how I'll use it since I really like the regular Dark Knight combat alot) but still only got 122 AP. Got me a Liverto weapon but am still upgrading it. Other than that I got a Gladiator necklace with 7 AP and a Asula belt with 6 AP (since I cant upgrade that one I'm not sure if I'll keep it for long...) as random drops. So I still feel like I am way to weak for my level Xx Going to up the Liverto and look for better accessoires. Also, is there any indicator if my accuracy is too low? I've read its a problematic stat for DKs but I never experienced a Miss or something like that

At some stage you'd still have to replace this though for better enhanceable accesories.
Yup. Tested this yesterday due to an argument in global chat and sure enough, still missing 10ap with 6 pcs.
@OP. save up 50-60 million and drop it on market. That should get you to closer to 160ap without having to hassle. You can get that much $ grinding soldiers grave for an hour or ten and turning in frenzy marks for 1 mil per 600.
