Yes: because it does a great job at being different from other MMORPG's in it's own complex ways the tutorial is level 0-50 which gives you plenty of time to learn and the games action take on your traditional mmo makes it much more engaging when it comes to the combat on the calmer sides the life skill portion of the game is great you can craft use alchemy train horses farm gather fish sail hunt proccess cook and trade i'm probably missing one lol but the game allows you plenty of options and honestly soo many you lose track of what you were orignally doing half of the time. the game also allows player to level up from life skill so lets say you want to be a pacifist and harm no one and just farm to your hearts content you can level up all the way to cap and beyond from farming while making a profit
No: because this is a very complex game as simple as it looks and seems at times it can take a large time investment depending on how you want to play and back to there is so many things to do which also means there is so much to understand and remember the game may also feel like a single player game at times especially without out a supporting friend group or guild since most things in this game can be solo'd there are also many traditional elements of the game that have their own complicated black desert feel such as the marketplace and bidding system on top of all of this i would say the RNG in the game is alot heavier than others since there are so many unkown variables for lots of task to add on to the unkowns there are also unkown stats to certain gear that can only be noticed by large amounts of testing and to top it all off the game is just now becoming much more optimized than what it used to be so expect some bugs here and there
But if you geared properly for PvE you can ramp up accuracy, which lets you hit higher leveled mobs more often and try to 'nuke' them as fast as possible before they manage to hit you once.
While overwhelming at first, it doesnt take too long to understand how it all works.
You can really play this game as a solo game with 'alive' NPCs too.
The non friendly part is that you are in a competition with others, quite a lot with 1+ year advantage.
Those people have a massive advantage in gear / level / money and, obviously, they use their advantage.
Even if you dont care about competition, you still are, for XP spots, for ressources, for rare stuff on marketplace etc
It means they can put preorders way higher than you without botherring (somewhat monopolizing the good and / or rare stuff on marketplace)
They can also kill you on sight if they see fit with nothing you can do about it.
But, all in all, if you stick to the game, you can somewhat close the gap with most people.
Keep also in mind this game is very very very grindy and intended to be played part AFK.
good game tho worth the price tag plentie to do
But there's very few multiplayer games where that isn't the case, heh..
Game is good, real good.
Lots to do, and cool community.
I think its very "New Player Friendly", as long as you have patience and understand the game is very deep, and has alot to do. Don't get overwhelmed by it all, and just focus on learning a little at a time.

Normally this is done trying to be carried they look for the best around hoping to be carried and pampered by them and don't realise the top guilds are competive not casual, and want nothing to do with htem till they learn the game and prove they are fit for the guild. Find one that matches your game style, I mean mine is quiet as hell but helps eachother and honestly I am outgrowing like crazy as they are just too laid back and casual, and I want get into node wars in a month, so will have to turn in my officer spot in a month or so with them since they do not pvp unless corned lol. Great guild to farm drops, and fish though, maybe you shoudl find one the many guilds like that, and work you way up to the big boys.
I mean I had a guild of 4 people farming the crap out of a zone to power level a guy offer to group with me other night a complete stranger becasue they felt bad that they were killing most the mobs in the area. I had to decline I was just doing some dailies then going to bed, but so far I have met more nice people in this game then bad ones lol. I mean hell only elitist players I know are the ones I got to play taht are the same gear score as me but grinding their butts off to change that lol
But I know way more tortises then hares in this game guys with 2 months on me with less cp, and energy because all they do is fish and save for the weapons I already upgraded myself using failstacks. Heck my guild leader is amazingly OP but he is tortise he has been playing since week one, refuses to pvp at all, and spends 90% of the day afk fishing with max slot count and a +16 fishing pole lol. 90% of his advice is save up, and afk fish more to get what you want in game, take your time and do it at your pace. How whole guild is though minus my pal and me though.
Most of the awful grinding is in Mediah because Valencia is too difficult without high levels of gear scoring plus the desert makes you lose hp over time, a very difficult way to progress without suffering. I think the desert costume has the perk to negate the health lost over time though.
catchup wise, yes. BDO does something kinda unique where it allows you to do activities afk to generate income, and yo can theoretically do them for weeks without touching the screen if you have the resources, the game does not kick afkers out. since the prices are controlled in the market, veterans cannot jack the prices of basic catchup commodities to extraordinary heights so everything is within reasonable affordability. Catching up in BDO is fairly easy compared to any other gear/unlimited progression based game out there right now.
