The closest thing I'd call necessary are pets, as they loot for you, and you'll be killing thousands of enemies in this game, so they save a nice chunk of time. You can have 4 pets active at a time, and they cost $9/$11 each. An event currently running gives one out after logging in for 20 days.
Other than that, maybe the value pack ($15/month) which gives account-wide inventory slots, increase weight limit, storage slots, remote node investment, 30% more money from marketplace sales, 10% more exp, and access to unlimited dye and character customisation while active. It's a lot of things, but all rather minor.
These can be purchased off the marketplace, and for pretty cheap, but are highly desired so it's hard to snipe one for yourself.
I hate it when games do that sort of stuff
Same but here i am, bought 3 pets and other stuff from the store and can't put the game down.
Before the massive wave of F2P MMOs, it used to be that you'd pay a $10-$15 monthly subscription fee, which (in most cases) filtered out the garbage players (chinese, trolls, etc) and paid for quality content. Of course, in the year 2017 noone will put up with that, so it's all optional.
Paying a (very) small purchase price and then optional crap via the ingame store seems like a fair deal. The only thing I'm not sure of yet is whether the ingame store offers stronger items than you can find via regular play. If there's one thing that is the death of a game, it's P2W.
No pay to win stuff in this game at all, its pay for convenience, cosmetics and such.
