How do you combine items?

I've been trying to do this quest, Gift for Happiness and it wants me to "combine" three items. Though I have no clue how to combine items in this game, so if anyone would like to lend a helping hand, that would be beautiful. :)

Usually, if they are non-stackable items, you need to uncheck "auto-arrange" in your inventory and then read the description of the item to see in what shape you need to put them together.

Some items need to be arranged in a V, others in a T and so on. Then a little + will show up in the corner of one of the items and you click on that to combine them.
