how can I turn off the chat?

press ctrl to go into cursor mode, mouse over the chatbox and there should be a cog icon, there you can choose what you dont want to see and what you do want to see :)

you're probably best to just use the chat filter to filter out the kinds of words that are used by the type of people you don't want to see talking. those memer words are a good place to start.

Just do it and you will have alot more fun then ever. The first time i played BDO i thought wth going on with the Chat , than after i turn it of it was amazing . Chat a bunch of rude lil kids talking about "Trap" 24h a day so freaking weird. O.o

If for some reason you want it gone completely, you can hit ESC and find the button called "Edit UI." Then click on the little eye icon to disable the chat tab entirely (or any other editable UI section you dont like.)
