'Name is already in use'

So I finally got to log in this morning, but hit an impassable wall at character creation. No matter what the name is it seems, it's already taken. I tried for several minutes to find a name that wasn't pure gibberish for the family name, and since that's what the game goes on regardless on character name, I assumed that individual character names wouldn't be restricted. But they are. And here I am 15 minutes later just typing in gibberish and being told that 'Name is already in use'. I'm starting to think it might be a bug, but even if it is, there is no reason that you should have to have an account wide 'Family name' that the game restricts, and then go on to restrict first names also.

When I started playing the game this also annoyed me since all games I can think of that use the family name system don't restrict the "character" name. Try something with an underscore if you don't mind the name looking stupid. I just made a new character with a made up name I've never used or seen before and it worked so it shouldn't be bugged, but I definitely relate to the frustration of it.

i've never really had this problem, might i suggest trying to combine two names into one that sounds good, i find that tends to get names 9/10 times

I was putting in names that are not real as far as I know and the game was not allowing but I did finally get two characters made with their own names without underscores. I won't be buying the Steam version as it may be tempting with the sale and all because I don't want to do everything over again. Log in character creation, game play, etc. I am not far though but still.

I always have problems finding a good name, took me around one hour yesterday but finaly i got a name i like :D Fun that even completly strange names are taken already XD

If by any chance you're trying to use a name that has two consecutive characters in it, it won't work. ie. Bill.

Something tells me there is filter that doesn't allow certain names.

I think there are just so many accounts that most names are used already. Same happened in all the mmo games i played so far.

Yea, but lets get real. There is usually some combination of names far from normal to be even counted as "commonly used" out there. It's more like filter has somekind set of rules that prevents you to create that and that kind of name.

If this turns out to be the case I would loved at very least know those filter rules so I can plan ahead when I am in process of making name.

I think there are hidden filters as well. It kept telling me the name is inappropriate or doesn't meet the rules or whatever but it didn't have anything outside of the requirements it states. It could have been the two consecutive letters issue that was mentioned above too because I even tried it with an underscore and another name after it and it still didn't work.

every name is unique in the game, its hellishly annoying when making a new character but it kinda binds us. cuz if you hear a fimiliar name, its exactly referring to whime you think it is

Yeah the naming scheme is quite annoying if you really have a name you want. Wish they took a tip from FFXIV on how names work.

It doesn't matter tho since they call me by my familly name rather than character name.

OK so //16/2020 and this is STILL an issue. FAMILY NAME should fix this.
