The sword defensive mechanic is functional. You want to click and hold the right mouse button in time with the bullets, and you will continuously block incoming fire for as long as it persists. However, if you press the right-mouse button too soon or fail to hold the button, the window to defend will close.
Attempting to block a shotgun blast isn't a good idea though. While it's technically possible, you're only going to defend against one of the projectiles in the burst, or at least that's how it seems to me.
Here's a video of me demonstrating it:

Same rule for timing applies to blocking sword attacks. If pressed too soon, the window to defend will close. It makes blocking sword attacks a bit trickiers since you don't have the lead time you would from a bullet traveling at you from a farther distance to anticipate it.
Need work and should be customizable. Nothing we can do about that right now, sadly. I'm guessing the developer intends to add this in later.
That doesn't sound practical to combine the attack and defend mechanics to one function. Especially if you're using the shield. You would always have to attack first before defending, and that leaves you open when the idea of defending is the exact opposite of that. The only other way to go about is, that I can think of, would be to make clicking the button defend, and releasing the button attacks, which sounds awkward.
Neither of those sound like good ideas for this game.
There are two gadgets you can select to scale surfaces. One is 'Hook' and the other is 'Poll-O-Matic'. You cast the hook onto a surface and you are pulled directly towards the spot it attaches to. The poll-o-matic are small devices that you throw onto a surface and then a poll will erect from it, which you can land on and climb. If you are high enough while facing a ledge, you may see a "climb" prompt appear on the screen, which is telling you to press the space bar to climb up over the ledge. I find most of the time I just end up kicking off the wall though. Speaking of which, to perform a wall jump just hit the space bar while in the air and against a wall and your character will push away from it, giving him slightly more lift than before. And finally, the is the wall run, where you must be sprinting (hold shift) and alongside a wall. When you are, press and hold the space bar to perform a brief wall run, from which you can also perform a wall jump.
If there are any other mechanics in which your ascend up a vertical surface, I can't think of any.
