Puppy Linux, USB Boot, Bad Laptops...
This is a bit off-topic, but given the chaotic situation in the Ukraine this may help with communications and people short on money with defective computers.

For the past several days my ASUS laptop has a ruined hard drive. I went through the usual steps, suspecting a virus or such, but was worried breakdowns were happening more and more often. I reset the works, etc. etc. Note my laptop was Windows 8/Puppy Linux Tahrpup via the LICK boot system.

Problem is both Operating Systems were on the hard disk drive, so neither one worked. No matter what you tried it never worked, and yes that included any efforts to load in "Safe" mode.

Right now I am posting this using the ASUS. No I did not install a new hard drive, no it did not snap back working again. I cannot afford to repair it, my passive-aggressive brother won't sign a piece of paper and my lawyers failed to take proper action (and never told me until Monday the other day). They better not try to collect the fee.

So- how am I doing this?

Puppy Linux Slacko 6.3.0. It is specially installed on a USB stick. Change the settings in the BIOS so the laptop can boot from it, wait a bit, when it is installed- it installs in the RAM itself- you can remove the USB stick so the port is available. I was able to access and save almost all files I had not yet backed up. With WINE most games, including "Foxtail," can be played and of course Windows apps- including browsers- can be used, as well as the Panda Wireless USB wifi stub, as long as the driver PET file is installed.

But more importantly I am using a public wifi. Bit of a hassle to do this at first- quirky wifi- but the fact you are reading this proves it works.

So you can go to the Puppy Linux website and find out the details for doing this. The USB stick must be properly done, but once done it is a fantastic bit of work from people who care about people at a financial disadvantage.

So if anyone in the Ukraine has a laptop or such with a bad drive and needs important files or the means to communicate with it this could be a huge help. It works and works nicely.

Good luck.
