"Windows" means very little. You need to state which version you have.

And, have you tried to varify the game files?
Morpheuskibbe Mar 29, 2019 @ 12:42pm
windows 10 64bit
i7-5820K
32GB DDR4
GTX 980

I did the verify game files and it passed

At least today its getting to the title page (message about there being lots of alternate solutions) and then goes nonresponsive and has to be forced closed.

I'm assuming you're running this version through the Steam app. I use the standalone GOG version, but I have the Steam version- on the 2012 Windows 8 64-Bit ASUS. I also have the standalone for both 2001 Sony and ASUS. If those specifications you gave mean anything then lack of power is NOT your problem here, not if the game runs on that antique of a Sony VAIO.

There seems to be quite a bit out there about problems between Windows 10 and Steam. Try this: find the Steam app EXE file itself (it's usually in a folder in one of the two Program Files folders in the "C" drive).

Right-click the Steam EXE file. Choose "Properties," then "Compatibility."

You'll see the option to run it with an "earlier" Operating System: XP, 7, 8, etc. Try using those, and see if it runs better. 7 might be the best way to start.

If that fails, try it with the "Foxtail" EXE file as well.

Good luck.

Oh- are you actually running it through the Steam app?

Runnign it through the steam app or starting it directly from the install folder makes no difference. wont run. putting it in compatability mode didn't help.
Morpheuskibbe Mar 31, 2019 @ 2:56pm
I still can't get it to run on my desktop but it runs on my laptop its just totally mute, but at least it starts.
Griswald1982 Apr 2, 2019 @ 12:03pm
Can you give the specifications of your laptop? And more information about your desktop as well? RAM, processing speed, exact Operating System, kind of chip(s) it's using, etc? If you look up how to run the command DXDIAG you can get quite a bit of useful information!

This is important too: in the upper-left corner does it say "Foxtail" or "WME?"

All right, now- both the Steam version and the GOG standalone version run on the 2012 Windows 8 ASUS. It is very formidable, although maybe not as powerful as what you described (it is 8GB RAM and has a 2.4GHz processor).

Since I do not have the Steam app installed on the 2001 Sony VAIO the GOG version is used. It runs as long as an extra "settings.xml" file that makes the game run with Direct3D is dropped into the folder and the three "SwiftShader 2.1" files are there as well. Its specs are 256MB RAM, 800MHz processor, Intel Pentium 3 integrated chip, Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 installed.

If the game runs on THAT ancient device then something else is amiss here.

Firstly, unlike the GOG version with the Steam version you not only need the Steam app but your computer must be online as well. This is probably a stupid question, but is all of that in proper order?

Secondly, the game needs DirectX 9.0 installed, at least if you want to try it that way. This can be tricky- just because you have Windows 10 does NOT mean DirectX 9.0 is installed from the get-go. You should try and find out if indeed it is.

This is a last resort: that extra "settings.xml" file and the three files from "SwiftShader 2.1" got the game running on an antique laptop. I've tested these things with "Foxtail" on the mighty ASUS which runs the game just fine by itself, and they work on it too. If push comes to shove and you want to try this let me know and we can see about you getting these things, I'll e-mail you the works if you wish (do not post your e-mail here!). I've used SwiftShader 2.1 for quite some time with no ill effects, especially since you copy them into the game folder itself.

"SwiftShader 2.1" is actually three files: "d3d8.dll," d3d9.dll," and "SwiftShader.ini" for adjustments. Again, you are NOT replacing anything in your computer's Operating System and these files must be manually copied into the same folder as the game's "EXE" file.

Well, that IS detailed indeed!

Your computer is far more powerful than even the ASUS. Both use Intel chips, integrated in your case too? What you have is a much more powerful version of what I have. As you said, there is no possible way the problem here is a lack of processing speed or RAM, or much of anything else in that regard.

And again, "Foxtail"- with just a bit of help- runs on the old 2001 Sony VAIO. The more recent specs given for the game are actually based on it since it is the oldest and lowest-powered device known to run the game. 256MB RAM (3% what the ASUS has which is 25% of what your computer has), 800MHz processing speed (1/3 what the ASUS has and yours has even more), Intel Pentium 3 integrated chip (anything needs to be said?), Windows XP SP3 Home Edition (ancient), 1024h x 768v 16-Bit display, you get the idea. "Foxtail" was designed to run on older and newer devices and if anything has been improved in this way since it was first released.

This is important: do any other Steam games fail, and do any others work? I've just checked around, and there is quite a bit about problems people are having with their Steam games after "upgrading" to Windows 10.

The little Sony proves Gingertips "Foxtail" runs on underpowered, antique devices. But your computer is better compared to the ASUS, that being the only one that is more or less on the same level as what you have. Its specs and your computer's seem to have a fair amount in common...except the ASUS is Windows 8 and yours is Windows 10.

"Foxtail" by default seems to run with OpenGL, which is why for SwiftShader to work that extra "settings.xml" file is needed- to point the game to Direct3D. Therefore it's a good guess that on your computer OpenGL is being used.

Here is a test you can try right now:

First, type or paste this with any kind of TXT editor, I use Notepad++ but any TXT editor will do:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<Settings>
<Rendering>
<RenderingHint>direct3d</RenderingHint>
</Rendering>
</Settings>

If you can, save it directly as an XML file; if not, save it as a TXT file and then change the file extension to XML.

It should be named:

settings.xml

Drop that file right in the same folder as "foxtail.exe;" by default this should be in one of the "Program Files" folders in the "C" Drive- you'll find it in the "Steam\steamapps\common\foxtail" folder (note: I manually installed all of this in the "D" Drive on my computer so it's different in my case).

Once you've done this the game should use DirectX instead of OpenGL. See if that improves anything.
Morpheuskibbe Apr 3, 2019 @ 12:58pm
After making that settings.xml file it still fails but in a slightly different way. It now starts up to a black screen rather than a white one, plays this jingle charm music. THEN goes nonresponsive and never gets to the main menu

When i tried it again its back to just whitescreen nonresponsive.

For your questions:

Q: integrated in your case too?
A: I assume, Both my PC's are prebuilts and I haven't modded them. (note I never 'upgraded' to windows 10. win10 is the only OS I've ever had on these computers.)

Q: This is important: do any other Steam games fail, and do any others work?
A: no. I have a pretty large library (Skyrim, ES:legends, crossout, Stellaris, Civilization 6, factorio, cities skylines, etc etc etc) and this is the only one i know of that doesn't work at all.

When trying the "settings.xml" effort on the ASUS along with SwiftShader with "DisableTexturing=0" set to "1" I too get that blackscreen/music effect.

If you know exactly where the things you are supposed to click are try that- see if it works but you just cannot see it.

If you can send me your e-mail by private mail I'll send you those SwiftShader files. It's worth a try.
Griswald1982 Apr 3, 2019 @ 1:35pm
Ah, why not- you can reach me at ConsolB (at) yahoo.com. Just call the e-mail "SWIFTSHADER" so I'll know.

Luckily .DLL and .INI files can be sent by e-mail, so that won't be a problem. I just tried sending the zipped files to myself and it worked.

Again, you merely drop those three files in the same folder as the "foxtail.exe" file. This does NOT in any way affect your computer's Operating System.

I am sorry for the delay. It turns out that one can send DLL files to oneself, but not to anyone else.

So I just now opened a "cloud storage" account and stored the ZIP file there. The link to download it has just been sent, good luck!

You weren't joking about having an extensive collection. They all work except for this game? I'm wondering, do any of the others require an Internet connection?

Please let me know if it works. Thanks.

Griswald1982 Apr 4, 2019 @ 12:23pm
MORPHEUSKIBBE:

This is very important: being unfamilar with storing and uploading things with those "cloud based" services, I uploaded the wrong "SwiftShader.ini" file.

The one that was uploaded was an older test file designed to cause a malfunction; this was to verify if the game needed SSE and/or SSE2 instructions to work (at that time "Foxtail" did not work on the Sony and I was trying to figure out why). The problem occurs when "EnableSSE" (if present) and "EnableSSE2" are set to "0" instead of "1"; if set to "0" the game absolutely will fail with the "settings.xml" file and SwiftShader.

This is why a "SSE2 Error" message would occur with SwiftShader 3.0- because SSE2 absolutely must be enabled with the "INI" file. If the SwiftShader 3.0 version works you'll know for certain because not only should the game work, but the "SwiftShader" logo will be there- the logo does not appear with SwiftShader 2.1.

All files have been replaced and double-checked. They have all been used with the Steam version of "Foxtail" on the ASUS: Windows 8, 8GB RAM, 2.40GHz processor, Intel Pentium Dual-Core processor, DirectX 11 installed.

This is how it works:

1) The extra "settings.xml" file directs the game to use Direct3D instead of OpenGL.

2) The game looks for the usual files, but is intercepted by SwiftShader. SwiftShader is a "software-based rendering solution." For example, the Sony is unable to handle the rendering part by itself, but with SwiftShader handling that part it can run the game.

If "Foxtail" fails to run on your more-powerful-than-the-ASUS-itself computer with ONLY the "settings.xml" file (so the game uses your DirectX) OR without anything (so likely your computer's OpenGL is being used) OR with SwiftShader as well (so SwiftShader's rendering abilities are used- which work on both 2001 Sony and 2012 ASUS; in the latter's case with both standalone GOG version AND the online Steam version- all verified twice over) then it is a mystery as to why it doesn't work- the only thing I can recommend is purchasing and trying the GOG version. If that works it's a problem with the Steam app; if not there is something about your computer that just isn't playing nice with the game. I cannot send you my GOG version as that is piracy and I like Gingertips.
