How do you unlock characters?

Hello. Could anyone tell me what is the best way to unlock characters? I unlocked a couple playing free battle but I'm not sure how it was done. Is it based on total points? Also, what are the points used for and how do you level up a character? All my characters still say LV0 even though I've played a bunch. Thanks for any info you can give!

You gotta get points. I gave myself 99999 points and unlocked almost everyone. You can also lose points, and from what they said, some character may end up locked again with that.

Some characters like the boss from the normal battle requires online play as far as I know. But actually if you're good enough it isn't trouble unlocking the characters.
