The slide button is inconsistant in the air

sometimes it gives me a boost but 80% of the time it just has me drop down like a bag of bricks, what gives?

It's all about the timing!

You want to dash when you are at the peak of your jump, just before you start falling downards. If you are falling like a brick you are pressing too soon.

The air-dash consist of 4 states giving you diffrent results deppening on when you time the jump.
