Nice ragequit there. Just play on servers with no mutators, hacks are effective on infinite ammo servers.
The game's great. It takes a more Half-life 2 linear route where the level are separated by racing, platforming, driving and boss segments. Duke 3D was more about exploration and creative modding; which DNF did not provide, so it part ways with the older fans. Newer gamers are used to ♥♥♥♥ like upgradable skills/weapons, objective markers, class loadouts; so it didn't sit well with the new. I guess the only ones they would appreciate DNF is those who are fond of the half-life series.
As for the history of the game; it went through development hell. The devs can't make up their minds on what they want to do, and eventually wasted all their moneys. DNF we have now was a console cut of what we could have: bigger world, nicer graphics, maybe even better gameplay. I guess another reason people hate this game is what it could've been.
- Regenerating health doesn't work in an DN game because it gets in your way by forcing you to need to go hide behind a cover instead of pushing forward and finding a hp kit.
- Weapon carry limit doesn't work in an DN game because there are all these different weapons which you aren't allowed to use due to for some magical reason duke being able to carry only 2 (4) weapons instead of 10. Yet he can no problem carry the construction crane replacement battery while holding a gun normally..
- Linear level design doesn't work in an DN game because youre supposed to be able to explore the maps for secrets to find better gun and additional items as reward. Now it's just boring "you move forward killing enemies" and never needing to worry about any resource management because regenerating health removes need for health kits and infinite ammo boxes + enemies dropping guns removes need for finding any weapons making it very monotonous and plain dull.
- Slow movement speed and low jumping height doesn't work in an DN game because duke is supposed to be able to dodge the enemies projectiles because it's not Call of Duty. Instead duke is now old and slow (actually he's even younger lookign than in duke3d yet runs like a granpa). You move slowly so you're forced to hide behind cover because if you're in the field trying to dodge stuff, well you get shot to death because duke is old an slow. Kneehigh jumping makes jumping basically useless because unlike duke3d, you won't be doing alot of platforming.
Those are reasons why gameplay wise DNF fails.
DNF story is also abysmal and eventhough it's abysmal they totally want to shove it in your face so it's an spectacular failure in that regard.
There's no modding tools so the community can't fix all the errors the game has to make it more playable and an Duke Nukem game.
1) Old-school players that wanted a reboot of Duke Nukem 3D and didn't get it.
This group has the most legitimate reason to be upset, for the reasons spessu_sb enumerated. A lot of Duke fans simply don't like the newer game mechanics. This is the only group I'll really respect of the three because they have a nostalgic connection to Duke and really wanted DNF to shine as the best game ever, or at least meet their expectations.
2) New-school players that don't get Duke.
This group got the game mechanics they're used to, but don't understand Duke, haven't played DN3D and have no nostalgia connection. Wrong market to appeal to, and the devs dropped the ball by bringing in mechanics from games like CoD and Halo. This group I don't really care about one way or another because they have no real reason to want to like the game.
3) Bandwagon trolls.
This group I have absolutely no respect for. Oh, you hate a game because another group of people say it's bad? How flocking original of you. Go play what you like instead of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about a game you have no interest in at all.
At the very beginning when DNF was launched, most of the hate came from group #1, with a mix of group #2. Right now I would say the majority of it is coming from group #3. It's "safe" to hate DNF because it has bad ratings. Granted, some people just generally dislike the game, but most of them don't frequent the message boards and rage over it, which is why I don't have them in this list.
As for myself, I love DNF. I had preordered the Balls of Steel edition, and I have Duke's bust proudly displayed next to my gaming rig. The game has its flaws, and I will be the first to admit that, but I actually enjoy the gameplay and the humor and the goodies that came with the Balls of Steel edition are unique and interesting to me. I also have ZERO regrets about what I paid for the Balls of Steel edition because it's a piece of gaming history, for good or for ill, and if it IS the last official Duke Nukem game ever made then I have something few others will.
So no, not everyone hates DNF. They just tend to be more vocal about it than those of us who like it.
There aren't many characters with the kind of bravado and audaciousness that the king has. If not for that aspect, which seemed to be misunderstood by some reviewers, and the long dev time, this would probably just be received like any other game. Personally I think it's a good game, and I always bet on Duke.
For the next one I would like it if they went back in the direciton of Duke 3D a bit, with more twisty-turny open "hub" style levels with a few objectives or keys, lots of guns at once, etc. But when this hit in 2011 it was the most fresh FPS campaign in years, and the multiplayer is still fun too.
