It does have progression, at least now. There are several weapons you can unlock, and while you unlock everything, the arena gets more and more enemies to fight. At some points you also unlock champions to fight.
I have played about 20, maybe 30 VR games. On average I have probably played each of them less than 3 hours. I am pretty sure the second most played VR game I played a bit under 10 hours, but this game I played close to 30 hours now, because its fun, its good exercise and it keeps getting updated, at least if you use the experimental build.
I have tried quite a few other VR games with melee combat and I dont really care if they got a story and such if they still end up not working as well as this game. They are pretty much always they regular "hit the enemy and they take X damage". I find that boring, this game, a lethal attack is lethal (well usually). Also you can actually cut off arms and legs.. or rip them off.
I would say one of the reasons its more than a tech demo is that the game has quite a nice selection of weapons and enemies and now that I have experience playing it I can "speed run" the game, that is unlocking everything fast, in about 1 hour, but otherwise that easily takes 3 hours if you do not play around with anything, and when you do complete the game and defeat more than 30 enemies in endless mode (in the experimental build) you unlock some extra options so you can experiment even more.
Its an new thing on the Internet. Some Indian got screencapped asking women to "show bob and vagene" and other lude texts and people have been making fun of it for a few weeks now.
Last night I gave the king the finger and someone chucked a rock at me, I went to catch it and punched my ceiling, the top part of my controller popped off. Luckily the connections for the controller simply unplugged from the circuit board and not broke off, it took a bit of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around but I managed to put my controller back together. The casing doesnt quit snap back in place but atleast its not broken.
Be careful playing aha.
The biggest thing that's missing -- in my personal opinion! -- is "proper" multiplayer (VR vs VR). And afaik the dev said "not gonna happen". However, there is a new (experimental?) local multiplayer where a friend can control an enemy with a controller on the monitor (or multiple friends? only had one controller to test...). That's already neat, but I believe there is still room for improvement: E.g. instead of current 3rd person view, top down dual stick "shooter" style //might// be better, especially with more players.
Still, it's one of my favorite VR games yet and worth the money. Worst case: If you don't like the gameplay you can give it back within 14 days and with less than 2h played (steam refund).
Disclosure: I have a 3x4m play area with high ceiling and a lot of space in all directions - that's where it really shines since I don't need to care about hitting anything. But I did play it with 2x1.5m, and while I had to be more careful it was still great.
