lego gta i am playing lego gta lego gta lego gta lego gta
Hello. I played this game for around 130 to 140 hours (though the Steam counter says that I have put in around 110 hours of time in playing the game), and I have completed the game. This is my review of lego gta.

lego gta is a rather unconventional LEGO game. Granted, its design is similar to its licensed titles, but this is one of two LEGO video game franchises (the other one being LEGO Worlds) in this particular design of LEGO video game that is not based upon a license. (I would have said The LEGO Movie video games would also fit in that kind of description, but they also have licensed characters in those games, so that did not fit the criteria for games like the one that I am reviewing.) When this game was first released around 2013 or 2014 for the Nintendo Wii U, it also had a companion piece that was for the Nintendo 3DS/2DS that was called lego gta: The Chase Begins, which is, sadly, an exclusive to Nintendo (and, honestly that game is begging for a remake/expansion, despite certain...attitudes towards police officers). Still, despite the times changing in around a decade, the game is honestly one of the best, as well as most original, stories from LEGO to date, and stories and games like this one are lessons that modern LEGO needs to understand. Well, enough chit chat, you wanted a review, well, here is the review.

lego gta, as well as the aforementioned prequel, both take place in LEGO City. Chase McCain, the protagonist of the story, is a police officer that works in LEGO City. (The events that led to Chase McCain going away from LEGO City are mentioned in the prequel to this game, but both games are stand alone games and you do not necessarily have to know the events of one game in order to play the other game.) Chase is back and he has a lot to deal with in the city.

The game is peppered with a mix of bad puns, dad humor, and some legitimately good jokes, but the dialogue is not horrible. Yes, it will not win any sort of deep writing awards, but this is a LEGO video game, and, as far as LEGO games are concerned, this is one of the best stories that has been told in LEGO, like right up there with LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, LEGO DC Super Villains, and the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes Trilogy (LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, LEGO Marvel's Avengers, and LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2). The story is good and charming in a typically cute and LEGO sort of way and that is good enough for myself. The story is good in this game, but, to be honest, I think that this game suffers from not having enough post-game content, and that kind of hurts the game a bit. LEGO should have remedied that issue with making the lego gta: The Chase Begins remade content be Bonus Levels in this game or just simply added some new Bonus Levels that tied into the main story. However, unlike other most LEGO video games, instead of playing as different characters, Chase can both get into different disguises, as well as recruit other people to give him a disguise of themselves.

The controls work well...on foot, but sometimes not so much in vehicles. Actually, sometimes, the camera can interfere with the player if they are running around in the game, and that can also be problematic whenever Chase needs to accomplish a puzzle to get a Gold Brick in the game. However, nine times out of ten, the controls and camera work, so it is not a thing that pops up much in this game, which, in comparison to other LEGO games, is actually a good thing and, to be honest, LEGO would do well to approach more of its games like this game in those regards.

The graphics make the LEGO look like LEGO...there might be some jagged edges on the in game character, building, and other models, but they are far and few between, and the target audience honestly would not care for such things because, well, it is a LEGO video game and they just want to play the game. Some weird gaffes with the videos also happen from time to time, much to my chagrin, but I had not received a single issue with the game shutting down on myself suddenly, unlike some other LEGO video games, even with their proper optimization on my little AMD Ryzen 3 powered laptop.

The Bottom Line:

Pros:

- The game has a good and unique story that can make the occasional laugh or remembering of nostalgia for people.
- The game has good character development, without anyone becoming annoying, grating, or forgettable.
- This game has a large city to explore, just like the GTA, Saints Row, Mafia, Yakuza, True Crime, and LEGO Marvel/DC video games, though, being as this is a LEGO video game, it is not as big as those kinds of games, but hey, at least it is a start.

Cons:

- The post-game content is non-existent, which is a shame.
- The vehicle controls are not always the best in the game.
- The camera can cause difficulty in solving puzzles for players, which can be frustrating if you are a kid.
- The video sections of the game can sometimes have weird glitches.
