How to make the farmer fly?

I'm stuck on the farm. I'm supposed to "chicken fly" across but I don't know the correct key sequence to fly. I can pull the chicken out, but then I sink like stone. What's the secret to flying as the farmer?

tap space once and tap it a second time. When you tap it the second time hold the space bar down. Hope this helps.

No kidding, this one is tough. Reminds me of the stories about trying to play E.T. on the Atari. Is there a cheat to just get past the farm?

Figured it out!
Helps if you have a running start. Go for the feather icons for a boost and extra flight.
This is similar to the astronaut's jet pack that comes in later.
