Controller problem (there is always a player 2)
Whenever I play it with my Xbox One gamepad the game automatically sets it to player 2.
Even if I'm using it as player 1.

If I play with the keyboard (which is awful) it works fine. As soon as I press a button on the gamepad a second player appears, even if I change the Input device in the control menu.
Both players use the input from the controller, so it's like I'm playing two chracters with one device.

I tried changing the input device (player 1/gamepad; player 2/keyboard) in both the main menu and ingame but the game doesn't seem to save my changes.
After the secon player appears the game seems to accept it when I set his controls to the keyboard. When I use the keyboard to have him drop out of the game and continue to play the game simply adds him again to the game and the gamepad controls both players again.

Does anybody else have the same problem or maybe even a solution?

push
because this makes playing with a controller impossible

Try this: Launch the game with the controller plugged in. Only use the mouse to click the PLAY button to launch the game initially, then don't touch the keyboard or mouse after that AT ALL.

When the screen says "press any key" - press a button on the controller. The starting menus should then say press "A button" to confirm (instead of "Enter"). If you touch the keyboard once the game is launched, it will mess it up.

I'm using an X360 controller & had no issues from the start. Hope this helps, or someone else replies, & you're able to play with the controller.

Good luck!

That is how I usually start the game. Still, thank you for answering. ;)

When I start it with keyboard only it clearly seperates the two control schemes (P1 keyboard; P2 pad). No matter what I do it seems that the game can't seperate the second player from the gamepad controls. It only does if I change the controls AFTER he is already there but as soon as he's gone it connects him to the gamepad again.

I never had such a weird problem with a Lego game before, neither with my old 360 controller or the XB1 controller :(

I found a solution! Updating for anybody else with this problem.

The problem seems to be the driver for the controller.
The auto driver that Windows 10 installs identifies the XB1 controller just as a "Xbox Controller" (in the device manager you can see this). Some games I played had a problem with this driver though (Dynasty Warriors; I am Setsuna). Because of this I installed the official XB1 driver, which works fine for pretty much any game I play.
Except for this one as it turns out. I changed the driver again and it works fine now.

How exactly do you get the 'official XboX controller' driver? Where can we download it from?
I guess somewhere on Microsoft's site, but where exactly.

I can't understand why this problem is only happening with this particular LEGO game as I have loads more and they don't produce this error unless you set the controller settings to allow Steam config. I reckon 'they' have messed with the code that controls the controller movement, which I can't understand why as it should be universally the same with ALL LEGO games, just port the code across each LEGO game and that's it.

[EDIT]
I have just received 2 new XboX WIRED controllers and I am STILL having the issue of the controller setup showing on screen when I press any of the four coloured buttons, A,B,X,Y. I have no idea how this problem can be fixed, other than the game controller section be re-written.

Have the same issue. Just bought XBox One wireless controller connected via bluetooth to my PC. Game runs in 2 player mode, which is not i want to play. The second player is always shows as being not setted up for input. Game does not save settings for player two even if i manage to do that. Any button pressed on my gamepad opens input menu to configure second player. Can't play at all.

Just found a solution that works for me. Go to Steam app settings -> Controller -> Enable enchanced XBox controller features (check this options). Restart your PC. Enjoy :)

This took me FOREVER to figure out but I finally fixed it, in the Steam controller settings enable "Guide Button Focuses Steam" and this will fix all issues. This took me weeks to figure out but I hope that this can help someone else out there.

I have xbox Elite v2 and it doesn't work. I don't have these problems with the cable, only with Bluetooth

Many lego games have issues with modern wireless controllers, for most people using it wired seems to alleviate the issue

For anyone that comes across this as a DS4Windows user you're going to want to have hid installed (the DS4Windows setup has this as an optional feature) and enable device hiding and check the box for your Sony controller
