If you don't want online ranked play to be dead on arrival then don't get the steam version. The devs or maybe even the publisher have made the mistake of restricting cross play to casual and lobbies and leaving it out of ranked.

The game isn't bad it just needs the crossplay on ranked.

The "Free" version came with one character. Nothing else. You could play online with that character and do the various single player modes but you had to buy all of the other characters separate. As well as all of the accessories and colors and retro costumes.

This version has EVERY BIT of content, every character, every costume, all of the stuff for a really low price. If you're interested in the game this is by far the superior deal.

I would argue that without ranked crossplay then this is ironically the inferior version.

I would argue that ranked play isn't the only reason to own this game. :P

so let me get this straight; getting the windows version allows me to play ranked vs pc and console, but steam only allows steam (and windows store???) users?

To someone who is an actual FGC player. Ranked crossplay is a deal breaker. If you're casual I can understand not being concerned.

Windows store and Xbox have ranked crossplay. They decided not to put it in steam. It honestly makes the steam version inferior.

Windows store is basically an emulated version of the Xbox engine, so you can play with Steam, Xbox and Win10 users.

The Steam version is on an entirely different platform but still allows cross-play with Win10 and Xbox in exhibition, versus, Shadow Lords and Lobby modes but not ranked mode (for the time being, that may change). If you've got Win10 go ahead and buy it there.

I mean I've been playing the game since launch night of the Xbox, bought every piece of content they've made, played the game on all 3 platforms and compete in local offline gatherings. I'm hardly casual but not having ranked cross play isn't the end of the world for this release. Most other fighting games don't have ranked cross-play either, I just think its a little to early to be claiming the sky is falling.

Yeah it sucks, I'd like to play ranked with Steam users but for the time being its not a reality. The KI dev team wouldn't do it just because, there's obviously some reason behind the decision. They're one of the most upfront and straight group of developers you'll ever meet so if they didn't add cross-play I believe there was a reason for it. If they can manage it I can assure you they'll turn on ranked cross-play as soon as they're able.

You might think I'm just stroking their ♥♥♥♥ but its true, these guys are awesome and if its possible they'll make it happen. If in the meantime you don't want to buy it, that's cool but have a little faith they'll make good on it if you can.

I really think new players should view the steam only ranked as a positive...a temporary positive.
From the sticky: 'This may change in the future'

I fully expect it to be enabled in the future. Get the game now and play against other new players still learning while you still can. You will get thrown into the same pool with all the killers soon enough.

The jago army is large in numbers.

I own both MvCI and KI ( also own all the other MvC games). MvCI is a completely different beast. Online is far more difficult and the veterans are more seasoned. So, for me KI allows me to be somewhat competitive while MvC I just get my butt kicked.
