How on earth this is out of early access?
This game is literally in the development stage.
There are loads of bugs, design flaws and mechanics that does not wok.

I enjoyed my time with this game so far, but it was by assumption is was being IN DEVELOPMENT stage. At this point many flaws may be forgiven. But If they decided to release game now? This is just silly and e should let the developers know that.

And just on top of this all, like cherry on the cake - paid DLC right away xD
Finish your bloody game first...

Just don't bother now and wait like next one or two years - this needs that much more work to be done...

You know, I can't understand these devs. They had The Pit, simple yet amazingly addictive rogue-like. It was popular and people actually waited for and loved to buy new DLC's for it. Then devs decided to make Kaiju game, which turned out to be an unbalanced buggy mess and devs stopped supporting it after few paid DLC's. Okay, bad things happen to everyone, maybe it's time to make something what people really wanted and asked them for? Like The Pit 2.

Well, no. They decided to do a remake of original Pit, in 3D. And I was actually curious, bought it, wanted to support them and wait until they "port" all content from the original game. Well, 1.5 years have passed, they added 2 characters, heavily discounted on sales. Probably will need to wait 4 or 5 more years to get the rest.

It's just one sad disaster, nothing more to add. Expecting it to die like Kaiju and devs moving on to the next "game".
Avoid or buy the original game.

Edit: Noticed "dev response" and decided to add something to it. So, it's 2.5 years after Pit Infinity "release", 1 year after my review above - game has exactly the same amount of content as before - unfinished, unpolished, abandoned. While I'm happy to see devs started to make The Pit 2, in order to write review about it - I'll need to buy it. And I already have two games from these devs I've bought in Early Access to support them and they were never finished. I know that game development can be a real hell and without any criticizm I really hope you guys will actually finish Pit 2 and bring at least "Mind Games update" level of content to it. And only time will tell when or if - it actually happens.

I found the fun. Eventually.

The Pit Infinity doesn't give the best first impression to an outsider. It makes infinitely more sense in the light of it being an attempt at an almost direct translation of the Steam-beloved 2D, turn-based roguelike Sword of the Stars: The Pit into a real-time FPS. The engineer, scout and assault classes, RNG/numerical skill-based opening of doors and containers, the enemy types, inventory and items, the labyrinthian floor layouts, and even the room furnishing designs are all given the 3D treatment.

There are two immediate questions. What can you say of a game so so early in its early access life? And does this FPS conversion produce a coherent experience in itself given how mechanically true to its spiritual predecessor it appears?

As to the former, the most immediate issues from such an early reveal are in its presentation. Textures look placeholder, all floors as you progress indistinguishable, and animations can appear awkward or simply be non-extant (no weapon switch animation). BUT I do like the detail in animations for using the various containers and keypads, and the enemies and their designs are consistently fun to discover. Voice acting doesn't grate, if not repeating a tincture too much, and makes a fine attempt at humour. As it stands, some stomach for jank is simply a requisite for entry. That initial long long loading screen on launch, the ever-present danger of random crashes, grenades not throwing, and I'm sure an assortment of other things I didn't encounter. If you're interested in entering the pit now, I suppose it should be as someone wanting to help a small developer out with a game in progress.

I think you could certainly ask what the minimum representation of a game should be in an early access release. This certainly feels earlier in progress that most others I've encountered, but that also enables more fundamental changes via feedback, so for a developer with a following it's perhaps the right direction. With an update schedule established and the promise of more regular weekly fixes, there is the hope that this will develop much like Sword of the Stars: The Pit before it. I'll leave you with your own perspective on that.

Most importantly, what of the game you'll play now? Combat dice rolls give way to traditional FPS antics, and everything else stays put - as bizarre as repeatedly failing a skill check on a door keypad again and again in a world of System Shock immersive sims can be (you can, in its defence, find floor keys and multitools). It's an approach to a roguelike FPS that does end up differentiating itself. Titles like Strafe, Immortal Redneck, Mothergunship, just to name a few, tend more towards FPS bullet hell principles in design. Surprisingly, much of what worked in 2D like waiting timers whilst opening anything (leaving you exposed to surprise attacks) and an emphasis on conservation of ammo, come out relatively unscathed. This makes for a considerately slower, more considered experience wherein run and gun combat feels discouraged or at least deemphasised. The kind of things such FPSs might forego so as to concentrate on their shooting dynamics - like inventory management, skill checks, hunger meters, and purely stat-based levelling up are all up front.

Some of the best, most 'Doom' like qualities an FPS can have these days, in my eyes, include a real sense of dynamism and an ability to avoid all damage primarily through a rejection of hitscan weapons. AND YET there's something quite engaging in a modern rejection of this. Combat can feel almost close to its 2D counterpart in how slow you move effectively emulating you being rooted to the spot and weathering all attacks as you dish out your own. If you want to avoid damage? You run. Investigating a floor for items, therefore, is about negating the war of attrition on your health from every encounter and balancing that with an immediate trip to the next floor if you've found the leaving elevator. It feels like the game has turned its back on all convention and bizarrely found its own centre of gravity.

Treating it as a tough survival experience - as far to the limit of 30 floors as possible - I found my engagement with it. It's a shame the thirty floors feel a vague, early access-constricted meta aim for now, but updates will come. It can be a ruthless challenge, offering as it does many an opportunity for progressing poisoning and disease, getting overwhelmed by mere handfuls of enemies, and becoming ammo-hungry whilst being bettered by every skill check you face.

What I didn't expect at all after my initial impressions was that I'd end up seeing *some* coherency in the game's design and actually relish my attempts at 'beating the pit.' I'm reasonably excited by the prospect of a fully-polished (especially crash-exorcised) Pit of Doom that doubles down on its mission of seemingly converting a hardcore 2D roguelike into an FPS as close as at all possible. It's bizarre, but wonderful to have these Devs charting this space. If they follow through with their intended update schedule, Pit of Doom could maybe, just maybe be one to watch - if not something to jump on board with earlier to help direct the course of. Just be aware that the ride can currently be a very bumpy one.

Your task in this game is that at the beginning you choose from the different classes such as marine, scout or engineering characters, decide on one of them and then you have to enter a terrible pit with your chosen class, which is made of high-tech Dungeons arise in which diabolical experiments on life forms from all over the galaxy are carried out. Depending on the character class you have chosen, they will bring you different skills and bonuses on your journey. The atmosphere is successful and comes across as a bit darker than we already know from other games in this genre. What is also noticeable is that in some cases the rooms hardly look alike or look the same. Enemies can easily go through doors even though they are locked. We as players have to unlock them first. But what bothers me more personally is the camera work, as it is often confusing, especially in fights. The game is the most fun in itself in the co-op mode, but it has also become more difficult. But why would you need 3 characters if it were just as easy as usual in solo mode.

Was ebenfalls auffällt, ist das sich die Räumlichkeiten in manchen Fällen kaum ähneln voneinander oder gleich wirken. Gegner können einfach durch Türen gehen, obwohl diese abgeschlossen sind. Wir als Spieler müssen diese erst aufschließen. Was mich aber persönlich mehr stört, ist die Kameraführung, da diese gerade in Kämpfen oft unübersichtlich ist. Das Spiel macht im Koop Modus am meisten an sich Spaß, ist dadurch aber auch schwerer geworden. Aber wozu bräuchte man dann auch 3 Charaktere wenn es noch genauso leicht wäre wie sonst im Solomodus.

The Pit: Infinity as it was in Early Access was a promising game - but this has been fully released and there are several problems that really knock any wind out of any player who thought they might decently enjoy this.

Playing the game, one will likely notice enemies will occasionally have pathing issues to the player - either taking bizarre routes to get to you or staying in once place because while they 'see' you, they have no idea how to get to you. You would think this would primarily be because of objects being in the way of you and the enemy, thus causing them to be trapped; but no, sometimes the enemies should be able to reach your character. Usually this issue is associated with Hallways and Rooms - them staring you through the door as you fire in and kill them. Note btw, sometimes they can fire back if they have ranged attacks.

Speaking of ranged attacks, enemies can be really annoying when fighting them. Sometimes enemies will be heavily obscured by walls or whatnot - but with a couple pixels of room they can apparently shoot at you around corners if they weapon is out far enough. Usually not 'that' bad of an issue and sometimes their weapon is more centered (so you can hit them while they can't hit you), but it can be annoying to have an enemy near a wall corner shooting you like this is D**MRL.

There are other issues besides inherent core gameplay issues. While this 'is' a faithful recreation of Sword of the Stars: The Pit, that doesn't mean that one shouldn't forget that some changes to the mechanics will require further thought. Food in this game is a big issue - and that's fine; but there are little lore blurbs and journal entries to read in this game and sometimes an inventory to manage. This stuff isn't an issue in a turn-based game but becomes one where a ticking hunger clock is in play such as this one. In many ways I should note that the style of gameplay here lends itself to being akin to Doom - you are rushing through levels at breakneck speed with little time to worry about much else; it should be perhaps designed with this mindset.

I didn't touch on the multiplayer but I have experienced some annoyances there as well. Instances where people can't interact with anything, seemingly disjointed gameplay sessions between players, and problems with loading levels are all issues I can name - and this ignores just setting up a multiplayer game where the host can set the difficulty but everyone else seems to be stuck on Normal.

I enjoy this game - enough that I have put at least a few hours into it. They are also updating it so it is likely a lot of these issue's stand a good chance of being resolved. But as it is now I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone buy it until a lot of improvement is done to flesh out bugs - and at least some of the translation issues from making a turn-based rogue-like into a real time action first person shooter are addressed.

To the developer: maybe add in a little Elevator Level in multiplayer for example where one doesn't have to worry about their food meter and can safely go about managing their inventory or reading the Journal if they want. Ability to use Med Kits on allies like this is Left 4 Dead might be something else to consider - or making them have an AoE so you heal both you and allies when huddled together. Also fix the Final Level.

I like the game. I think it's fun. Would I recommend anyone buy it? Absolutely not. It's a horrible janky broken mess with glitches galore, terrible enemy AI, unfair mechanics, and sometimes the game just doesn't work. Like, I have no idea why they thought that this game should be out of Early Access. It's dreadfully bad. But, it's fun.

WARNING: long post ahead

I really wanted to recommend this game, but at its current stage, I cannot. While I enjoyed playing it and have reached the end of the campaign with multiple characters, I do have some major gripes with it that remain in my mind.

Weapon Recoil
In what seems like an odd design choice, your gun is not focused on your crosshairs at all times. With most guns, you have massive recoil after each shot that causes your gun to flail wildly, thereby making burst fire and auto-fire modes to be far less useful. While you can get used to the recoil and adjust accordingly, taking damage from any enemy also causes you to flinch and recoil on every hit. This becomes a major issue especially when most enemies fire at you with pinpoint accuracy, not to mention those using beam weapons that hit you multiple times per second, each hit causing you to recoil and your gun to sway. It doesn't help that you need pinpoint accuracy yourself, as enemy hitboxes are finicky and bullets have some travel time, making it that much harder to hit moving targets. This isn't strictly a shooter game, so having these tricky shooting elements seems baffling and result in unfair annoyance rather than an added challenge.

Geometry and collision
More than once, I've gotten stuck inside of interact-able items, such as lockers or beds, or in set pieces like foliage or debris due to the animation you're forced into when interacting with containers. While most of the time, you can free yourself by crouching or destroying the item you are stuck in, it really gets annoying and detracts from the gameplay. Once, I got trapped in an area I wasn't supposed to be able to get to on the Jungle biome and couldn't get back out, but thankfully, the autosave allowed me to restart that floor. Sometimes, you can use the geometry to your advantage, like being able to shoot on immobile enemies from around corners, but I doubt this level of cheese is intended.

Inventory management
It's hard to believe that there's no auto-sort function in the game yet, even after leaving early access for this long. SOTS: The Pit started with an inventory sort, why doesn't this game have one yet? While it's not a game-breaker to have to reorganize your inventory manually every now and then, this is just another annoyance that seems like an oversight.

Enemy AI
Enemy AI is fairly rudimentary. Most enemies will merely charge at you and attack you with melee, or, if they have ranged attacks, will fire their weapons at you while charging at you. That's not the issue, though. Some enemies know exactly where you are and will hunt you down from halfway across the map. And did I mention they can open doors? Especially doors that are locked to you? I've lost track of the number of times a security bot opened the door I was lockpicking and immediately unloaded its clip on me while I was still in the animation. While I get that some enemies can open doors, it is highly inconsistent. Some enemies will chase you out of rooms, while others will not and just stay there while you shoot them down from outside. Again, annoyances that don't make it challenging, but rather frustrating.

Enemy spawns
Each floor spawns with enemies in rooms and enemies roaming the halls. The enemies in the rooms don't change, but hallway enemies are not all spawned in at once. As you start to thin the herds on the floor, more enemies will spawn in the hallways, meaning previously cleared areas can be repopulated with enemies at a moment's notice. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason in how they are spawned in. I've had enemies spawned right in front of me while I was fighting another enemy, allowing it to take potshots at me while I was already distracted. These kinds of incidents just seem to add a level of unfairness to the game that just feels cheap.

RNG
The game is heavily, and I mean heavily RNG-based. Every item interaction has some sort of skill-check. While the further you go in your game, the higher your skills will get, but your chance of success on each skill-check will never exceed 99%. This is fine, for the most part, but I've had more than my fair share of epic fails on 99% success rate skill-checks. This wouldn't be so bad if the game didn't require you to have certain amounts of firepower and armor to make it to the end, both of which are dependent on your luck, rather than skill. I've failed multiple runs where I either ran out of ammo or never found additional weapons or armor because the game decided to be stingy. It's a terrible feeling to fail when so little of the circumstances of your failure are in your control.

There are some bright spots that I want to acknowledge. The game is still very playable and enjoyable to an extent in its current form. The atmosphere feels right, the crafting system is an improvement over SOTS: The Pit (no more wiki needed), and the dungeon crawling and loot hunting aspects are the main draw. There is still a lot to like in this game, in spite of the issues mentioned above.

But ultimately, the game at this point has an unfinished feeling, even though it's already out of early access. Movement is floaty, the gunplay is rough, and some areas still poorly optimized (the Jungle biome caused massive frame drops for me). I know there are still updates being made to the game, so I hope they can address some of these issues somewhat. I thoroughly enjoyed the predecessor game, SOTS: The Pit, so I really wanted to like this game, but right now, it leaves me with a bittersweet taste in my mouth. And for god's sake, put in an auto-sort for the inventory.

I mean, that pretty much sums it up right there. If you somehow missed The Pit, the game this is based on, it was a top-down classic roguelike - turn based, thoughtful, requiring good tactics to make any progress. Also, I was absolute garbage at it and have yet to beat it, apparently common among other players.

I am happy to report that this game will indeed kill the hell out of you at a moment's notice, with remarkable enthusiasm, and now, because it's realtime, you don't even have time to take in how badly an ass whupping you are about to take before the alien hordes are upon you.

I would say this is a fun and largely competent translation of the original game into a first person RPG. It's not a pure FPS - your character skills seriously effect your ability to damage enemies, even if you line up the crosshairs. Co-op Multiplayer is now an option, so someone can loot your smoldering, acid-ridden corpse! Or even revive you maybe, if they have the DLC and feel like it. This also means crafting has been simplified, which I don't mind.

A lot of effort was given into making it not a Doom-like but rather an immersive sim kind of experience. You can run around but you should really carefully explore. The roguelike and rpg elements are still strongly present. There are all kinds of animations that play out as you open doors, defuse traps, cook food, etc... I really enjoy these little details and the solid gameplay keeps me coming back.

The graphics... don't. I don't normally care about graphics, and even love pixellated retraux ps1 style games, but this game has some serious style issues. If you don't care, just buy it! It is undeniably fun.

There is one rather strong negative, not enough to ruin the game but enough for me talk about it: It's kind of an ugly game. I'm sorry. I don't like to judge games by their graphics, and I know graphic artists can be expensive, but it's bad to the point that it does effect my enjoyment of the game.

I will give the game some credit: The enemies and especially the robots are pretty charming and have good design, clearly translated well from their 2d art. But, this reinforces a problem: the realistic and cartoon designs of entities and environments clash constantly. it's weird but I can put up with it. However, the early level environmental textures, early enemies, and all of the human/player characters are straight out unbearably bad.

The textures, model design, and overall art style for player models are lifeless, blurry, and poorly detailed. Seriously, they're terrible. I've been belaboring the point for three paragraphs, and I still really cannot overemphasize how irredeemably terrible the gormless flesh puppets calling themselves "human" look in this game. They look like terrible quality tabletop models. They fell from the top of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Gunny's mom looks more appealing then these guys.

Whether your character is staring blankly at you in the inventory screen, you see your co-op partners, or fight the madmen you find, it always looks bad. Finding a helmet to cover up their god-awful faces is a priority. It was barely tolerable in early access but it's just embarrassing to look at now on release. I don't like the Borderlands comic book/cel shaded style, but if ever a game should have tried it it's this one.

I love the original roguelike and it's exciting playing it in real-time and in 3D. Everything is instantly familiar like the sound of the mobs, the loot, the general feel of the environment, though it's a lot more atmospheric and creepy.

I think some people have gone into this expecting a more traditional FPS experience when it's more of an RPG. This is not a purely action-driven game, it's about character building, discovery, dying, and getting better each time you play it. If you enjoy dungeon crawling and all the messing around an RPG brings, it's great. If you don't mind dying and starting again and you aren't looking for Doom it's really worth a go.

At the time of writing this, I have completed Insane difficulty runs on all three base classes.

This is a remake of Sword of the Stars: The Pit as an FPS Roguelike. Most of the aspects of the game are the same as in the original, with some notable exceptions that, for the time being, make the game less punishing. For right now, the game is even less punishing because the content is about equal to The Pit before any DLC were released, so it is significantly easier to get the drop(s) you desire.

First, of course, is that this is an FPS, which means there's no more percentage-based chance to hit enemies, rather, that ability lies in your own ability to aim. This is doubly helpful as there are no range limits to firearms.

Second, because this is an FPS, it means that melee enemies are much less immediately dangerous than in the original. You can use your mobility and ability to move-and-shoot to come out on top in situations where that would have been impossible in the original.

Third, it's possible to retry floors, as there's a more robust save system in place. With this, the more bull-headed player can try his hand at reducing the caprices of RNGesus or try another approach to a floor that's clearly out of his league.

There is a multiplayer feature at present, but the ability to load multiplayer saves or create manual multiplayer saves has not been implemented just yet. Multiplayer is, incidentally, quite a bit harder than single player due to the need to share resources and increased enemy selection when two or three players are present.

Additionally, right now, there is limited moddability, as many variables are stored as code in plain text files. The game is running on one of the newer Unreal Engines, so there may or may not be an SDK release in the far future.
