What is food for?

So I have a back pack full of raw meat and vegitebls. I know, sanitary right. My problem is I don't know what to do with it. When I talk to villagers. They say "I need food" and offer there hands out. But there seems to be nothing I can do. Is there something I am missing or is food just another form of fancy colored rock.

Discovered the usefulness of food in my 2nd or even 3rd playthrough. It´s always good to have something to snack around when cawling in pushes or doing double time in the swamps. Jump into the area, get stamina full and have a quick marsh on desired location.
