Fish Farms
Do fish farms use fish resources? I'd figure they wouldn't, but fish farms always produce virtually no fish whenever I use them to produce a self-sustaining canning industry.

Any ideas?

Also, do fish ever replenish? I haven't ever noticed them repopulating.

Fish farms have infinite fish, are free from maintenance, so free fish ;)

If you place too many wharfs next to each other, then you'll overfish and lose the resource near the wharfs.

Not wharves. Fish Farms. Two different buildings. And thanks for asking this, I've never been 100% myself, though one would think (by definition) that a Fish Farm is self-replenishing resource.

Its not infinite fish.
Fish farms do use a set amount of fish resource. Unlike warfs which will see fish resource go from green to red in a few years, fish farms go to red instantly as soon as u plop it. Try it in game. You will see it.

As an example lets say (when checking ur resource map) that a patch in the pure green belt of fish is worth a max of 1000 units of fish. Placing a warf will see it slowly dwindle from green 1000 to red 150 in a few decades. Placing a fish farm however reduces the fishing area instantly from green 1000 to orange 400 and stays that way for the remainder of ur 2020+rule. Ive seen it.

The more farms u place next to each other the lower the amount they "farm" since placing a farm reduces a set amount (for example 600fish) so placing two next to eachother hurts eachothers productivity as the number of fish are too few for both farms to run at 100%. So space them out if you want your farms to farm the max amount of fish. You will notice in your resource filter that when placing a farm only a circle around the farm is being fished. So try not to have other farms fish in that reserved circle.

Cant help you with your repopulating question, i make a habit of never sucking resources dry like trees or fish, one lumbercamp/fishing farm (or warf) per resource group. If you space your fish farms you will never need to worry about fish running out. Ive nvr noticed a deficiency anyway.

Fishing really sucks. I tend to use it at the start on island with bad crops to supplement my food supplies. New building is slightly more useful but not enough to build an industry around.

If you want a self-sustaining canning industry then just grow lots of cash crops with biofarms or plantations.

Fish farm is a cheat. Build 5 farms and get 50000-60000 annual income does not depend on ships or resources.
