Rare events: Is it normal that...
Hey,

Is it normal to have 2 tornados by the year 1957?

Also it seems that tornados are programming wise, homing devices that know exactly where your city center is, is this supposed to be random locations or the tornado is supposed to always touch down in your city center?

In another game (Banished) tornados are completely random and many times they aren't anywhere close to my population but in the most recent game of T4 that I was playing earlier today, both of them hit major population area, felt very unnatural.

Tornados are the only thing that ruins the game. They should be changed or removed. Yes torndos always will go there where your buildings are, it will never hit a forest or an empty field. Always ALWAYS your buildings.

Wow, bummer that they are not regular tornadoes but rather they are homing tornadoes.

Oh well... T5 is almost upon us.

i had one hit in the forest then after while made its way to town but only took out 1 or 2 buildings. slighly more happy then when it takes out 4-6 haha

Yeah their homing nature is annoying. And it's like they're programmed to always take some buildings, a few, but not too many. In my case that usually means a few farms because my city is too densly built to qualify but yea....

are the multiple tornadoes random too or are they a scripted event in that one mission?

Tornados and other natural disasters signify that you have some environmental problems on your island that need addressing. They're nature’s way of "fighting back"! Also, you may notice that they target or destroy certain polluting or environmentally damaging activities.

As you noticed they are *not* random. It's a clever part of the scripting of the game! You will have to look at what environmentally damaging activities you have and think about implementing a more environmentally sustainable economy or policies to counter it.

What's your pollution like? Do you have enough garbage dumps that service your city (including outlying farms)? Have you upgraded industry to be less polluting? Do you have dirty polluting coal-fired power plants? Do you rely too heavily on mining? Do you rely too heavily on forestry (hint build more horticulture stations set to reforestation if you are). Have you enacted certain environmental edicts? Do you have enough parks and green space in your city? Try looking at the the environmental faction's demands and implement some of those.

So just to reiterate the natural disasters are *not* random. It's the environment punishing you for not taking the environment seriously enough and it's part of the game! Not having enough garbage dumps that cover your city is one of the main causes.

I thought it was god. Since I usually have trouble satisfying religion requirements.

Mostly because churches don't turn a profit while rum factories do.

If what Simon says is true then it's a might bit unbalanced.

It's the beginning of the game... I've got one industry, gold mining and jewelery. If that is raping the land then I'm not sure what else to do really.

My pollution seemed fine, I have one garbage dump.

I solely rely on mining this early in the game, usually I start out with gold mining and jewelry, if there is no gold on the island then I rely totally on oil. When I used to use oil only I never experienced any tornadoes.

All my factions are listed between 75 and 100% as it's so early in the game nobody hates El Presidente yet.

So, I think there is a bit of randomness thrown in here as I should not be getting punished for having one gold mine and one jewelery factory this early into the game.

That's fine and all, I believe that I can turn off these disasters so I'm not so concerned about it, I'll just start up a new island and play with events turned off I suppose as it's just too annoying to get 2 tornadoes by 1957 even though financially it doesn't mean a hill of beans as one gold mine and one jewelery factory keeps me rolling in money, much more than I can even spend before the next ship comes to take away our jewelery and bring me more money. The tornadoes are just an annoyance of having to rebuild what was destroyed, that's pretty much it really.

Thanks all for the posts.

Ahahahaha

I think it is part of the scripting in some scenarious even if you're a good environmental citizen, so don't blame yourself. But in general that's the reason.

Try building a horticulture station and some parks and see if that helps. It's just my thought anyway.

There's a mod that makes tornadoes last a quarter as long, though it makes them move 4 times as fast. Makes the disaster less annoying though not any less damaging.

the tornado that hit me was well away from everything, it just went through some trees and dissapered.

What I find effective is to have a group of shanties away from town.
They are around $300 each if quick built.

I find tornados tend to home in on them, much like real tornadoes target trailer parks.
