How do garbage dumps work?
Hi, just got this game and new to the series. Bit confused on how garbage dumps work....should I build them right in the middle of the most polluted areas, or outside of the polluted areas? Do they generate more pollution themselves?

They do generate some pollutoin, but for I believe $2000, you can reduce how much (and they generate FAR less pollution than they clean up). With the pollution overlay on, I typically put a garbage dump towards the edge of the lightly colored area (lighter yellow), in a place that it won't interfere with crops and whatnot.
I also install one in industrial zones, just because of how filthy they get, but I normally don't care if it's right in the middle or towards the edge for that.

In the beginning it might not seem like anything's happening, if you're watching the overlay, but in reality the garbagemen will do their job and then you'll see the results after several months.

I normally don't invest in a garbage dump right off the bat. The environmentalists will be angry about something you're doing regardless. And not having one doesn't necessarily cripple your city.

This. It looks ugly but that's how it works.

To avoid ruining the Cities' aesthetics, I usually avoid doing this at most I may set a couple of dumps on the edge of my towns and let them "reach" into the city to clean up the pollution, but this is only necessary if you don't have the Modern Times DLC.

If you have Modern Times DLC, as you progress building modernizations negate most pollution from residential buildings. That and the water treatment plant becomes available which is far more pleasing to the eye.

Yeah with the pollution overlay you can just make sure they cover the major reds and yellows. It doesn't matter how close they are so long as they cover the polluted areas, so edge of the city is okay and you can probably get away with not having any inside the city unless you really built a behemoth of a city.

Garbage dumps have a radius, and if I remember correctly that can be increased with an upgrade. They reduce poultion within their radius, pollution makes the enviormentalists unhappy and lowers enviormentla beauty wherever it is. Enviormental beauty determines the enviormental happiness of people who live or work in that area, everyone has that stat so it helps to keep a happy populace. Parks, trees and such will increase beauty in an area, but if you have heavy polution they won't help much. Most structures will produce some kind of polution, some more than others obviously, and it accumulates over time, so you'll want to have any developed areas on your island covered by a dump's radius.

With wages and up-keep acounted for it doesn't, pretty useless work mode if you ask me.

Probably not. But if it works it doesn't need teamsters (the garbage is imported magically)
then you can make a little bit of money in-between shipments, which is pretty nice. Some other buildings do this too, like like prisons, media buildings and oyster farms.

Well wait a sec, assuming you are running a dictatorship shanty town you can probably lower their wages to $1. I might try see if this is possible. Would be very funny to see an island fueled by 20 garbage dumps.

Okay I did a little test.
I bought nothing on a new save but admittedly one bunker, because figures people don't like low wages.
8 garbage dumps made about 16k profit in a year.
So each garbage dump can make about 2k a year ;)

Here ran it a bit longer:

In total had to put up 2 bunkers for safety, 2 farms to feed people and 1 immigration office to get more workers.

It actually turns a decent profit. I am willing to bet it would be very possible and easy to even please the Tropicans with all the services and housing if one wanted. Fun thing is I see the profit grow at an even rate. Not going to be my favorite business idea but it works amazingly well. Also environmentalist respect you'd recon would be bad for putting a million tons of garbage on their beautiful island. Wrong, it was 90% O.o

That's cute. You should post it on www.reddit.com/r/tropico

I like plopping them down near the middle of my city - preferably right behind a grade school. That allows me to cut funding for toys and recess equipment. The kids will find plenty of fun things to play with in the industrial refuse! (OK, so the game doesn't really let me cut funding... but you know I would!)
