Garages are your friend. 90% of transportation and housing problems encountered by newbies can be solved by regular use of garages. The problem is that with higher populations, you will almost always encounter traffic jams. These can be circumvented by creating pseudo- multi-lane roads (build two roads parallel to each other), ensuring that your road network has a lot of cycles (ie. there are multiple, mutually exclusive ways to get to any destination along different road segments), and/or spamming metro stations (aka "Teleportation stations").
But, is it better if I build a garage a team office near the farms, or just a garage?
You almost invariably want to move the teamsters office away from where it originally is on the map, since this usually becomes downtown central of your town and the very LAST thing you need is on top of all the people trying to get in and out of that area, teamsters trying to do the same.
