I'm playing through the modern times now and it's not fun, it feels like a chore actually.
3 missions in and campaign showers you with time limited tasks. You have a lot of time to complete them usually, but it still is a timer on your nerves.
Theres another annoying timer in a new campaign: every year or so a new building will be unlocked. Usually an upgrade of vanilla, but ugly and expensive. You are forced to build new ones. For example markets, they are replaced with supermarket ten times the cost, require educated workers and you have no choice but to build them.
Some things are gamebreaking. I had an 'export fish' mission, but new fish farms production just won't count toward the progression meter.
As other people stated, new building rob tropico 4 of its banana-republic looks, turning it into a soulless stell and glass city-sim.
Also by adding timers the game stops being super easy, like thats clearly a good thing
Supermarkets actually provide higher food quality, making them much better.
For example, one of my Islands, I have a large population centre near my tourist area, but this area is far away from where all my farms are.
A marketplace allows my citizens to get food without having to travel to the other side of the island.
You aren't really missing out if you just stick with the base game.
Some makes the game better, so is worth it, some does not really add anything to the game.
That doesn't equal zero.
I know, I know. Just get mods to remove everything Modern Times adds then problem solved.
Or, you know, just don't bother in the first place.
