Tourism?
So I keep seeing so many post saying to avoid it at all cost, and its only good for supplemental income...
Am I missing something? I have a tourist based economy making nearly 400k a year, with out the need for massive dock and teamster network. It also dose not drain a limited resources, like iron or logs, and without "hurting" the land with over farming/ranching. The best part is, with the right build (Travel agent, hotel buyout, sailor, well travailed and social) you can build one tourist docks, one FREE hotel and the luxury cruiser with just your starting cash, and the moment you get your first 8-12 money bags...er i mean visitors to your island you'll make almost 20k the first batch....so again..why is tourism bad? and what other economy can be set up just as easy for the same kind of profit?

tourism is cheating :P like i tried doing booze baron and trying a Rum based economy and it flatlined fast...

It's bad becasue it simply makes ♥♥♥♥ money compared to industry, barely covers costs comparatively.

this is what i see a lot of people say, but its never worked like that when i use it, the moment i get my first foreign aid , ill have the free hotel, a motel one dock and the cruiser set up and be damn near red, but then 15-20 tourist show up and boom i almost instantly have $30, just from the first set, i use that money to build a marina more motels, and another dock and boom im now making $100 per set, this never wavers never degrades, dose not need constant supply its self sustaining and will run indefinitely, where as Rum(don't get me wrong can make about $100k per factory) needs a large high school work set, creates massive pollution(although it can be off set) and the sugars plantations will degrade and ruin the soil to the point you will lose a large chunk of your profit just to feed the factory. On top of that tourism creates constant(all be it smaller) income, meaning you dont have to sit and wait in dept of 10-20 grad while your goods are shipped(also rum needs a much larger workforce and buildings overall, teamsters docks and what not) so you end up sitting at -$20,000 for a few months then have $100,000 for a few months, and this is using Rum witch im told by many people is the BEST industry....

Everyone keeps telling me industry is the best, makes the most money, yet when i try it, it fails hard, takes longer to set up, and only last so long, am i doing something wrong? should i not focus on booze? Im open to ideas so please, is tourism is such crap and industry makes so much more, then tell me what industry? what kind of set up? Every one i have seen people say works, has failed in practice

High shcool education is trivial with just a single school, which you need anyway. the pollution is trivial with garbage dumps, which are necesarry anyway to keep people happy, and can turn a profit. It's more profitable to import Sugar that to grow it, which causes no degredation (though even with it, games don't last long enough for it to really matter)

The constant stream isn't really a bennefit, there's little difference between getting it all at once, and getting it slowly over time. You spend it all the same. Tourism also caps out at a certain point, and simply isn't as profitable per-person as industry. In addition, profitability goes down at big populations due to traffic issue. (True with industry too, but tourism is even mroe negatively affected)

Sound like you're just trying to jump into industry too quickly without setting up beforehand. I usually go with mining a nearby metal deposit to get startup money first, preffereably bauxite. I also place a clinic, church and Pub right at the start. If I have good cash crop farming nearby I might start with that instead. If I have nearby metal, Tobacco or Coffee, I do that as my first Factory, if not then whichever I get a mission for first if it happens, otherwise just a random one (that's actually decent)

Your Avatars build can also have a big effect, make sure you're not using the same one as you use for tourism... I go with Green Thumb, Entreprenerial, and I think it was Hard Working for traits... Elected as Capitalist and Professor background. (The bonus learning and bonus skill gain is great for ramping up quickly, faster people get good at theri jobs the faster I start raking in money)

i have never had issue with traffic as i build my tourism i don't know what to call it "zone"? away from the rest of my city and make sure to build 3 roadways so they always run smooth, and iv never had tourism "top" out, i just add another marina and boom another $100k/y, but i think i should have said this sooner, I'm not building EVERY attraction, or trying to please every type of tourist, i focus 90% on spring break(basically the only things i build are the Cruise liner, marina set to finishing, the cosmic pin set to all you can drink and the water park for the kids) i also build the buildings needed for the edicts to boost tourism more and just have them not worked. Ii usually end up with a tourism rating of 140 90% spring break and 10% wealthy and make I don't know how much as i always spend it but by looking at the buildings about 1M a year. it creates 0 pollution as motels are bugged, ill also add childhood museums(for that sweet sweet Swiss bank)maybe i should just add a screen shot, or two

You must have never gone to a particularly high population then, building tourism 'away' from everything doesn't help traffic later on, especially since tourists will use regular entertainment buildings as well.

There's a max cap of 200 Tourists on the island, once you're arround there, you simply can't increase tourism revenue.

Sure you can make a profit with it, just, not nearly as much per-person as industry, and it stops scaling. Are you saying you have an income of 1M a year from just tourism? I would like to see a screenshot, because I find that rather unlikely...

so a population of 700-1000 isnt high? and iv never seenthes magic 200 cap as thee are times when i have had 250...and yes even then traffic wasnt too bad, i wasnt constantly getting "a garage is overloaded" but clearly this is a case of he said she said, everything you have said, i have not seen in practice, all these limits and problems, im just not haveing in game....

It's a soft cap, and it might actaully be 250, but the point is you'll reach it well before you reach the population cap on tropicans.

Max population is 1500, which is when it get's really bad. Unless you're using Modern Times, then traffic is mostly irrelevant. I guess if you only use tourism and no industry you wouldn't run into traffic problems, but I doubt you're employing 700 Tropicans meaningfully on just tourism either.

I'm still interested in seeing a screenshot of this 1M income you claimed you got, that's something that interests me the most. I'd be willing to admit I'm wrong about tourism if I see proof, but everyone who claimed that was unable to show it...

I'd also be interested in a shot of an 'industry' island you couldn't get to work, it could perhaps show some insight into problems that isn't conveyed over text.

sadly i have completed both those missions, would have to maybe start up a new game, and i said i think it was around1m i was just going off the buildings(the money made this year thing) as the money was spent faster then i could count it

No autosaves or anything left? Rather unfortunate.

It's been a while, but I think I still have saves from islands pulling in 5 Million a year, (Sandbox mode, so no special mission bonsues and setup in less than 50 years)
