Devices/Locks
So. A really long while ago, no one had Devices/Open Locks skill and there were complaints and lo, so towns had the skills for training but STILL rogues did not get them for free which was counter-intuitive and not at all canon for D&D in any edition, so complaints were made and lo, Rogues had the skills for free. (They still had to level them of course and the skills were little good until you failed with your rogues for quite a bit so that the "proficiency" leveled to match your ranks in it. Fine not my favorite version of the D&D rules set but eh, indie game/unique rules sets/slow implementations.

OK but then coming back to try out bards and other changes I have found that once again you can't buy the skills anywhere, so the only one who gets them is the rogue you start with. And you fail to start with a rogue thinking you could multiclass into that part of the game later you will find you are vastly and sorrowfully mistaken. Newly minted rogues multiclassed over are as ignorant of devices and locks as any beer swilling barbarian or cleric. AND there are no towns that teach this essential skill. Essential because you need both skills to get through any dungeons or open any chests/bags that are locked that you might find.

I get that things change in EA games but this game has been around a REALLY long time and the improvements seem to come and go at the dev's whims without any seeming logic. If anyone can point out where this is incorrect I will gladly listen. For years I have had hopes that this game would one day be fully playable in Adventure mode instead of that being just an afterthought tacked on to a BG-like Arena sim.

You should be able to find towns where you can learn this skill, if I'm not mistaken it's in the adventurer guild. I don't have any rogues in my party and I'm able to disable most traps and open most locks.

Also, there's a button at the bottom-left to by-pass a trap if you get stuck because your chance to disable it is too low (I remember because in a very early version of the game this was missing, right after disabling traps was implemented)

As it turns out it is only in a couple towns which are easy to bypass since they aren't the main quest towns, where you can buy the skills. I don't know what you mean about a bypass button. I've never encountered that in the game.

Also I can see why you don't have any rogues. They really are pretty terrible even as a secondary class. Whereas in actual tabletop D&D rogues can be pretty awesome to play, in LMA they suffer greatly from lack of well anything interesting aside from occasional sneak attack damage that can be painful to set up. Though the past level 10 feats are definitely useful. They just aren't very interesting.

The bypass button I was referring to is called the "forced trigger" button, left of the "disarm trap" button. It looks like a running guy, pretty much like an icon of someone running towards the exit.

I simply haven't gotten around to trying rogues yet to be honest. I started with all melee when the game came out, only a few months back I added sorcerers & wizards in the mix :)

10 leves of rogue are almost mandatory for every melee class, especially on level 40 cap and arena mode (there you get 30-60 levels of other classes then rogue only).

In Low Magic Age, you need to find a city that has an Adventures Guilds to learn locking picking and disarming traps.

The Old Capital, a small city in the west, has one that teaches Open Lock.
As does Ajm, a large Metropolis south east of it, teaching both Disable Device, which is trap disarming, and Open Lock.

Natthbal, a poor small city closest to the start, has an Adventures Guild that only teaches disable device.

And while you’re there: make certain to train up other characters in Open Lock, Search, and Disable Device at the cities that offer it; you don’t want to lose that capability is someone drops ☹.

I like Low Magic Age, and I record my gameplay and thoughts as I make my way through the game; over 40 videos so far!

I explain much about the D&D system Low Magic Age is based on (3.0), as well as the specific House Rules that are presented as options in the game. I explain each action I take as I take it, both in battle, and in the stat and feat planning out of my 6 man band.
