I think that the developers have some plans to improve the trade system, but that won't happen until after they have implemented more classes, races, and game features and then returned to working on the campaign mode.
But the gains are indeed minor compared to what you make from a dungeon or completing missions.
minor and in most cases you're carrying a lot of extra weight if you don't watch how heavy some of these items. First thing I'd change in a patch is abstract the weight of trade goods to zero and assume you have extra horse/carts to carry it.

And BigSexy, the reputation boost is gained if it was a quest otherwise it is a standard trade transaction.
