Broken Sword 1 - Shadow of the Templars: Director's Cut (2009)

Hey, this game is totally fantastic! No really!
So, I've been playing tons of adventure games this year.

Well this is the best one so far!

This is far better than highly rated modern titles -- because I often disagree with their high ratings.

This is better than every pendulo adventure except yesterday, far better than deponia (& chaos on deponia), book of unwritten tales, etc....

Why? A big part of it is because those games all suffer from lots of grossly unintuitive puzzles, that in places almost require a walkthrough or trying an exhaustive combination of things that make no sense whatsoever.

But this game has a story and characters that I actually care about, and an environment and history I can relate to. The dialogues are intelligent, clever, and totally believable.
I haven't even finished the first game yet but already I can recommend it highly.

The puzzles have all been excellent and thoughtful, though one of the cryptograms was quite tough.

And today the whole trilogy is only $2.50!

I totally agree with you! I played through it a few mins ago and I would do it anytimes again! Absolutly awesome and highly recommendable.

I agree with you wholeheartedly (although I will say that I have some favourites among recent adventures as well, Runaway 2 and 3 being two of them).

I don't want to spoil anyone's fun, or badmouth the other games, cause I enjoyed those too, but don't get your hopes up too much for the two other games in the trilogy. They come nowhere near the masterful storytelling and execution of this one.

eta: by the way, your post makes it sound like maybe you haven't played the classics yet? Sorry if I got that wrong, just disregard what comes next then! I highly recommend the Gabriel Knight trilogy, for example. This game always kind of reminded me of Jane Jensen stories, so you might enjoy them too. She also wrote and designed Gray Matter, which is fairly recent (2010, I think?), but also happens to be one of my personal favourites.

Yeah, 2 and 3 weren't anywhere near as good, I can only recommend the first one now.

I never did try gabriel knight. I didn't like runaway 2 (grossly unintuitive puzzles), but thought 3 was quite good

1 of the best point & clicks. Old but still works like a charm

I agree on all counts, I've been playing the broken sword series and yesterday on my Android devices and they have blown every non-telltale modern adventure out of the water.

I am not old player, or a point&click game lover. However, this game was really good. I think I loved it because there is a little piece of everything. Some good dialogues, two main characters, not so many objects which are unrelated to the story, well placed puzzles, and good cut-scenes.

I do not know if I shall try the other games of the serie. If they are not as good as this one, I should not play them, just because I want to remember the serie as a nice one.

One of my favorite games of all i have played, i just hope the new Broken Sword will at least be worth playing, and not like the s****y "3D"-games.

Just started this game.

I was badly exhausted by this genre since the Sam & Max episode games and have not touched any adventures since then. I hope it is as good as you say.

I grew up with Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle, Broken Sword, Leisure Suit Larry and all those classic point & clicks. Nowadays I don't like this genre anymore, but after having played this game again I understand why. It's because the games in this genre are not as good anymore. A point & click needs good puzzles, interesting stories and engaging artwork and atmosphere. I haven't found any recent games to really deliver on that front, except for maybe Vampyre Story which was an enjoyable game.

Gave up on this title since last reply. But Vampyre Story kept me locked to the screen until the end.

Anyone else played the original? It's way more solid than the Director's Cut, which is sort of hacked together. (Old and new bits clash pretty bad, and some scenes were cut out, plus dialogue was cut out)

I would recommend getting it on GOG since you can get the original as well. I think if you play both as I have, you'll be kind of shocked at how they butchered some scenes in this version. If going to GOG isn't an option than this will suffice, since it's still pretty good.

I completely agree with this!
