I have not tested this with Patrician IV, but with other games I have tried to fix these resolution problems by opening the ATI control panel and by creating a custom resolution that was exactly 50% of the resolution of my monitor panel (which is 3440x1440). As such my custom half-res is 1720x720. After being set up in the ATI driver that resolution is selectable in some older games also. And in the ATI control panel you can force on the 8x8 or better antialiasing and it makes the font and screen still somewhat legible. It can be a happy medium choice you can try and see if that helps for you in this particular game. It's sort of universal solution that sometimes helps. With this method you can also try creating a sort of in between say 75% resolution or something like that.
The problem with old games is that the UI needs to be upscaled along with resolution and sometimes your choices are either big resolution but tiny text, or half-res using the ATI/Nvidia control panel trick that I just described.
This may work as a halfway fix until the gamedev creates a better solution. I'd like there to be a completely new game like say, Patrician V, of course, myself. Actually it would be cool if it spanned all the previous games of Patrician III/IV, Port Royale 2 and Rise of Venice, which are all a part of the same game series. I guess what I am saying, is that I hope there will be further games in this series.
