I agree with you 100000%, with game engines getting sooooo object oriented and easy to use, makes any one a dev these days. With that said quality is down the tubes and steam is invested with shovelware.
And yet the damage has been done.
Oh look, another "real X should be..." kind of person...
Arent I just the worst?
This. Steam Achievements are completely pointless now thanks to this game and others like it. Now anytime me or anyone else sees a profile with lots of achievements we'll just roll our eyes and think "I bet they farmed Zup.."
Which really sucks for the people who actually earn their achievements the hard way, and won't be taken seriously anymore unless people mine their games page.
I think this game's achievements are probably just for use on showcase, example "WELCOME", or "HELLO", etc xD
Well, considering it's a one-man studio (I think?) and there's three Zups out there, let's count. Estimated owns of Zup 1 & 2 are about 130 000 units, Zup 3 will likely sell in about the same regions. I'd say, 200 000 units of all three games is someho realistic by the end of the month, as Zup 3 is sure to get some extra-attention through controversy and media-outlets alike.
As I can't find external bundle-information, we don't have to account for that. Going with regional-price-differences, discounts and bundles on steam (zup-zup), let's say the median-sale price of a unit is about $0,7, although I'm not sure if this estimate is convervative or not.
In any case, as it's a rough estimate, Steam is said to be taking 30% of sales profits, leaving 0,49 to the developer.
Makes about $100 000 for the work of three months, but he's going to have to tax that in his respective country - idk where the dude is from, but I'd say 40% tax on this kind of income should be relatively common in most nations, leaving $60K, which is still fine for a few months work.
BUT this is only suggesting that the developer alone is on this payroll.
Additional profits come from card sales, which is about $0,03 per card, as foils sell a bit higher. As every of the games had 4 cards for each user, let's say it's $0,1 net profit from cards per user. Let's say half of the users sell their cards on the marketplace while the rest buys the cards, which I think to be a convervative estimate, it's 100 000 times $0,1, so $10K - 6K after taxes.
For all those absolute nitpickers: I am - as you should be by this point - absolutely, fully aware that this is just a very, very rough estimate - I explained my methods, that doesn't make it less of an estimate.
Bottomline: $65K income for about six months work (?) for Zup 1,2,3. Not a cash-grab in my book.
It takes time to unlock the in-game cards.
