However there is rarely a tradeoff with space. In this game, you always have more metal to expand your ship than you have silicon with which to make equipment to fill that space. Usually people make the mistake of spending their metal to grow their ship, even when they don't have the silicon using components to fill the space in the ship. That IS a mistake.
The opponets you face in the game depend on your total ship size. They couldn't care less what components are in your ship. So if you've spent all your metal growing the biggest ship you can, but in the ship are a mere handful of shield and weapon components, you are still going to be meeting NPC ships in the weight category equal to your ship, except 'they' will have the gear you do not.
The smartest strategy is to keep your ship small, to only grow it when you have enough silicon to add more shields and weapons, etc., and to only add enough space to contain those new items. Never add ship size just for extra space alone.
