I like IG1 better then IG2, there is a limit on fleet size in it and balance. In IG2 there is no limit and it boils down to just having one mob army fleet that no one can stop and you just take turns conquering each others planets then lose then again.
i started playing ig2 when it first came out and found the interface intuitive and easy to get into but i bought ig 1 a couple of weeks ago and find it a bit of a nightmare , it gets bogged down by detail and keeps on ending if i fail a mission leading to much loading and saving and backtracking / wasting time and just gets annoying after a while.
good job it was very cheap
Ok I played it loads on CD, so I knew what I was doing but I just finished it on hard in a 15 hour campaign run. Did involve a few reloads in the early stages for insti death campaign missions I'll admit but not many
IG1 hasn't aged well in some ways but I still love it and its cumbersome interface haha.
The OpenIG fan project might interest you guys as they've remade IG1 with many improvements (including HD resolutions). There's still a few bugs to iron out but I was able to finish the game a few months back just fine.

I have heard of this but to me they changed too much about how the game plays, I dont like e.g. you can build more than one church etc.
That is customizable in the settings.
