They can multiply to an absurd degree once you tame enough to start reproducing with each others' spores.
I don't think they're very strong, but for 40-60 HaP to tame them, this result isn't bad. If nothing else, they make for extremely durable meat shields in my systems to stall the AI's attacks while my defenses wear them down.
Think of them like flowers: they need another one so they can cross-pollenate. Once they do, they can spread pretty fast.
Definitely better on defense than offense, though. Even minor defenses will kill their expansion attempts.
