Ridiculous trades
So the merchant in this game has some crazy demands that dont make sense as there is one fair offer and two ridiculous ones, let me explain:

for e.g. 30 hemp, you can give him 20 wood or 20 salt. who on earth would give him 20 wood? salt is so much easier to make and consumes maybe 2 wood and 2l of dirty water in the process. And 50 rotten food is also a rare resource as rotten food only slowly accumulates over time if you are being purposely wasteful or is acquired in small amounts through exploration events and is required for fishing.

for e.g. 1 fire crystal or ancient knowledge: 20 pelts or 50 cheese. are you kidding? 20 pelts require 3-4 days worth of hunting while 50 cheese takes weeks.

for 30 seeds, 10 water is fair. 10 beer? what the heck? making 10 beer requires more water, never mind the wheat. and 20 milk is only available in such quantities if you own 3+ sheep and have just milked them, or it will begin to spoil.

my suggestions:

16 rotten food
20 wood
40 salt

20 pelt
16 iron
10 cheese

14 water
4 beer
8 milk

You don't get pelts consistently and since the sheep pen is kind of a late game station you probably don't need all the milk you get once you have it. And once your herder is good enough, you don't really need to feed your sheep, so you can have 4-5 without issue. So the milk and cheese trades are fine if you ask me.

How are you managing to be short on rotten food? The crap meals you get from fights and cooking should spoil, as should your milk and any excess meat or fish you catch. You aren't feeding people crap meals, right? Even if you were short on rotten food, it would be easy to just gather a bunch of fruit and let that spoil.

yeah ever since i built the dryer and have been having rainy days, my supply of rotten food has greatly increased.

i used to feed them crap meals, thinking the sickness hits are manageable.

That sounds rough. It takes a lot to cure sickness. You have to get herbs, you have to have the healer and the healee spend a turn, and then to top it off you need to deal with all the depression that the healer just recieved. And crap meals aren't even that filling.

By "merchant", I guess you mean Loki? The God of treachery and mischief?

Gee, I wonder why it would make such demands.
