Don't get me wrong, it does sound awesome, and I want it to be a real thing and to work well. I've just seen SOOOOOOOOOOO many hype-y cool tech device/peripheral projects over the years that either never actually get released or get released and turn out to be rubbish (including other VR headset projects, several of them). Yes, I know they have a prototype. No that doesn't acually mean squat as to weather they'll ever have a product. Yes, I know they're working with game devs to ensure compatabilty. No, that doesn't mean squat as weather it'll actuall be good if it does comes out.
Until it actually ships, which IIRC is still at least a year way according to the company itself (read: "soon", valve time, etc. I.e. expect longer), it's BS. I want it to be real, but the hype machine for tech stuff like this is so beyond broken that I just can't take any such projects seriously anymore.
Sony's HMZ-T1 is "just a tv screen that has 3d in mind". It is a totally different experience, I tried both headsets.
Probably the most important difference between the oculus rift and virtual reality devices that came before is cost. It is made from the same components that are mass manufactured for mobile devices, thus making it significantly cheaper than what has come before.
I don't really see what the point is of hating on it. Yeah, it might fail, but so what? Whats wrong with getting excited about something that might be cool? Is it just so that you can give yourself a pat on the back if it fails? Because that seems pretty pathetic if that's all you can do to feel better about yourself.
Just saying... if I had told my grandparents about the idea of a smartphone back in the 80s they would have sent me directly to the next mental asylum...
People have been educated/indoctrinated (depending on your nation) to hate/fear what they do not understand. Rift is a disruptive tech after all.
Rift will be AMAZING. I really hope it turns out to be something that I can plug into my 3 titans for processing power.
VR has been massively sucessful in the past, just not in the consumer market. Rift will be the disruptive tech that pushes afordable VR into the living room.
Anyone who says otherwise is sadly mistaken, i'll just leave it at that.
Dang, that is all too true.
