It changes. I wont spoil anything, but the first part of the game goes easy on your as you are still learning the basics of the game.

The game wasn't meant to be hard, but I guess it is in a sense. The game excels in atmosphere and thats where its really supposed to get you, supposed to be more immersive than a hardcore game. But anyway its not a hardcore game(like I said) but it can be hard, depends on how well you can act under stress. There`s puzzles(minor spoiler that you likely already knew about) but they`re not hard. Its only hard because you can`t fight back, and the monsters are faster and stronger than you(and you have to act under large amounts of stess).
But yah to summarize; there aren`t boss battles that have 20 times the health you have while you blast him with spells or a gun, but you do have to run, hide, and do puzzles while under the influence of stress and fear of every nook and cranny.

The game starts VERY slow, that's for sure. And it is definitely dark throughout a lot of the game (thus the name). But there's a pretty marked shift from "wow, its dark and there's spooky noises" to a more plot-focused narrative where it's actually *really* messed up. It gets pretty intense as you go further along. I won't spoil anything, but there's a particular event that sort of "marks" that transition.

The game implies living the story, imersing as if you were there. Get into the feel of what Daniel (very very very small spoiler on name) is going through and what will happen after you start in the situation it gives you. Its ment for you to feel the real horror of monsters chasing you as you have to run to survive as they are imperviuse to all things. You goal is to survive as if you Were Daniel and not to beat the game as the game tells you. Playing to win will make the game boring, and the changes will happen that makes it even better as said by the commentors before me, but i feel i am stating the obvious.

The game is atmospheric to the max, and that's what it's made for ... to unsettle you, surround you with a sense of dread and unease, never knowing what will happen next. It's in first person, but it's an adventure puzzle game, not a shooter, so if you're only into shoot shoot kill monster type games this probably isn't for you. This is a true horror game, one meant to get under your skin and stay there, and it does that very well.
